What exactly does Nizoral shampoo do?

I thought that shampoo was for dandruff. Why does everyone use it in their hair loss regimen? Can anyone enlighten me on this? Thanks.

Beyond dandruff control, it helps to thicken hair follicles. The main ingredient ketoconazole also is said to help with scalp inflammation which is believed to also combat hairloss.

It is actually debated. empirical evidence suggests that nizoral somehow thickens the hair follicle, and several studies confirm that long term regular use (for as long as 10-12 moths) actually stops or even reverses hair loss. Ketoconazole has also shown to regrow hair in mice, and comparative studies show that it can be as effective as rogaine 2% in regrowing.

Ketoconazole is an anti fungal agent, but also an anti androgen. In pill- form, the side effects actually resemble those of finasteride; loss of libido, gynecomnastia, loss of body hair etc, although they are much more common and much more persistent.

In its topical form, however, it has been suggested that ketoconazole acts on the androgen receptor, thus distrupting the local dht pathway. Another theory is that the anti inflammatory effect counters the chronic micro- innflammation of the hair follicle.

Could you provide a link to one of such studies?

According to the below website. Ketoconazole (the active ingredient in nizoral shampoo) displaces both D.H.T. and estradiol from S.H.B.G.! Could this be the secret to M.P.B.?

http://aac.asm.org/cgi/reprint/23/2/207.pdf

"Ketoconazole selectively displaced steroids from serum-binding
globulins. Dihydrotestosterone and estradiol binding to sex hormone-binding globulin were inhibited by ketoconazole
."

The questions about the efficacy on NIzoral can be answered through a little research..jees..It's not exactly arcane or hard to find. Some of the posters here are either lazy or stupid. :stupid:

Here's one:

2% Nizoral Shampoo Increases Hair Growth in Men with Male Pattern Baldness

And, in the comparison study ketoconazole was actually better than minoxidil in some aspects. There was one case study where a Japanese guy grew some of his hair back with Nizoral, but then stopped using it and lost his hair again. Got back on Nizoral and it started growing again. So, like minoxidil, it seems that ketoconazole has to be used consistently too.

Ok smartass. I probably read more in a week than you do in your lifetime. Not everyone has many hours to look through tens of pages of documents to simply get a yes or no answer. I was just asking people why they use a dandruff shampoo for hair loss and I was looking for a quick answer.
