Hello all! I am a 29 year old male and started noticing my hair thinning and receding at around 26. Later this week, I plan to introduce myself and post my story in the "Tell Your Story" forum. However, I need to make some appointments ASAP and have a few questions about doctors.

BTW: So far, I've only visited my primary care physician who simply said that he could write me a prescription for Propecia. Despite it being the most effective treatment out there, I don't want to take Propecia. I am also aware of Rogaine and Nizoral and may be interested in using them. Although Nizoral seems to be extinct these days.

My Questions:

  • What kind of doctor can I visit to examine my scalp under magnification in order to assess the degree of miniaturization of the hair follicles? One website I visited suggested an "experienced medical hair loss expert" who can examine a scalp using device called a densitometer. Does any here know of any good doctors in Manhattan?
  • What kind of doctor can I visit to discuss future hair transplant options? Will this be the same "medical hair loss expert" I am inquiring about in my question above? And does anyone have any recommendations?
  • Finally, are there any recommended barbers in Manhattan who are experienced at giving haircuts to men with receding, thin hair?

NOTE: You can PM me if it is against policy to recommend a specific doctor on the forums.

Thanks in advance! I look forward to learning more and apologize if these questions sound foolish!

If you know you have symptoms such as receding hairline/temples, thinning and crown loss, then you need see no doctor only to tell you you have Androgenetic Alopecia. It is waste of money. Actually, if you post your detailed pictures here, we can tell you that for free. Doctors/Derms can not do anything, but just to write you prscrip for finasteride. That is it. They cant do anything. For your second question, I think there is an hair transplant forum here who can help. And barbers in my opinion, do not matter much. Just pick and choose one.

If you are going to see a doctor, see a dermatologist but like The Mentalist said, they will likely prescribe you minoxidil and finasteride, some will not even give you finasteride.
