What makes hair grow quickly?

Is there anything I can take (natural or otherwise) that will speed up the rate in which my hair grows? I want to grow it out really long to see if I can pull of a shaggy look, which means I need the hairs at my vertex and frontal third to grow REALLY long. It's taking forever.

I'm currently taking MSM, fish oil, Vitamin E, C, and B complex and a men's daily multivitamin.

Any thoughts? I've googled for it, but so far all I've gotten it a lot of "there's no way to grow hair quickly... unless you buy our product!" crap.

Appreciated.

Nothing really, people talk about MSM but dont expect any dramatic results. I'm pretty sure that even with all the supplements on the market a 10% increase is about all you're likely to get.

Quite a few products claim to grow hair fast in regrowth of traction alopecia, and some forum testimonials are pretty good. I use Virgin Hair Fertiliser now and again because of such testimonials, but I'm sceptical. I just bought it because it was cheap and some people were raving about its effectiveness. Its like £2/$3 for a coupla months worth.

My mother has been using Dermalmd Hair Growth Serum and has noticed a difference in her hair - she was losing her hair a lot and has since noticed her hair is getting thicker.

To my knowledge, nothing has been discovered that substantially increases growth rate. Men's hair grows slightly faster than female hair. That being said, if anything does do this, it is likely to be minoxidil but it's very difficult to determine exactly what minoxidil does but it might increase growth rate when used orally. I have eaten gelatin in the past and tried biotin and different serums and there's not any payback worth the money. Mostly the goal in the hair loss game is to decrease catagen and to increase anagen. Females can have anagen states lasting up to seven years. For balding males, it might be less than a year, which is approximately three to six inches of growth before it falls out and then gets weaker and weaker.

People fixate on hair counts which are largely based upon anagen not anything about hair counts per se. The follicles remain productive but you can't see the hairs because of how small, thin and whitish they are.

Best of luck,

Janey

I have a lot of thin/invisible hairs all over my scalp, do you think minoxidil will thicken them?

Possibly. I left that out but minoxidil seems to increase the diameters of hair shafts and this again is not reliant on hair counts but it makes the hair that you have count more. Janey loves plays on words.

Oral minoxidil, to me, looking in the mirror, appears to increase hair growth rate but it might just be that hairs are popping up everywhere now as I am at the 10 month mark and now down to 6.25mg from 25mg daily to reduce peripheral sides like alien eyes, which I used to deny and rarely had from topical min, and the re-establishment of my beard follicles. Only electrolysis appears to be able to stop this peripheral hair growth. Laser will but I am trying to titrate downward to find the right dosage because laser damages follicles but it generally won't kill them and it won't work on blond or gray hair.

Several baldness meds might increase hair shaft diameters because one reason for benevolent sheds is the mismatch in diameter between the end of the strand and the beginning of the strand as it grows. For some reason, search isn't working but the owner of the site wrote an excellent article about inflammation coming from benevolent shedding and why Keto or another dandruff shampoo might help. I used to eat gelatin packets in college because it was purported to help nail growth which I didn't care about but also hair diameter. The stuff is nasty and it didn't work.

How long do you think it will take me to see results? Searching on reddit I see that people already report seeing some thickening after 2-3 months

Currently I have shedding but it's not massive at least yet

And I see a few white flakes here and there on my scalp (not many) which is a sign of it drying out due to minoxidil use right? So maybe I should get a dandruff shampoo

I think most likely all people seeking hair improvement in a male context need a dandruff shampoo and maybe two, for inflammation and dandruff. The three I mainly know or four are Keto, Selsun Blue, Aspirin-based ones like T-Gel and then Head and Shoulders which is much less harsh and nicer for hair. I would try them all. I rarely use keto anymore and it is piling up in my place since it is covered by insurance but it's simply too harsh for most females for whom sebum is a plus, not a negative.

Females who brush distribute healthy amounts of protective sebum up and down hair shafts. Brushing also seems to be a milder form of mechanical hair treatment at least in reputation down through the ages. Many of us are afraid to brush and comb for obvious reasons but unless in a shed, we ought to be able to do this and it is healthy. We might end up accelerating telogen by days but maybe it's the opposite, by moderate brushing. This might also help dislodge flakes. It was horrible for me to arrive to court say in winter with my hair disheveled from the wind but also with flakes all over my dark suits. I don't have any dandruff anymore that I can detect. Because you have had a transplant, I would recommend derma-rolling because it might make the grafts more productive and sit better although that might be not so much of a problem now. Back in the 80's and 90's cobblestoning of plugs was normal and expected and many of mine only produced a couple of hairs so not only were they moved, then they became less productive hair-wise and they scarred. I know you are the expert on things nowadays but some things still relate and derma-rolling and for the obsessive like me, doing all over the scalp and face and neck for looks, plus using retin-A on neck, face and scalp seems to work amazingly well. I expect a full recovery and I have posted pics of my exhausted plugs and before my best bet was just to thicken the hair around them. Some of them still itch after Goddess, 30 years or so and microneedling helps that. My temples are filling in around a few unproductive plugs but the microneedling seems to be reviving those and I seem to be experiencing a hair miracle.

I am afraid to leave the house in my car. What if I have an accident and waste all of this great hair by dying and stuff? Eh, still worth it and transplant guys, don't think it is over for you. If it works for me, it might re-energize fringe hair and Dupa and the stem cell activation might renew all follicles. There's a reason why I am on here all of the time and it's only partially to gloat, well not really but I am seeing things from Estrogen, Oral Minoxidil and Microneedling that were only a pipe dream in terms of what I expected which was something like pic 2 below, which I could have lived with from low-dose estradiol and I seem to be on my way back to 17 again at almost 57. And it's miraculous and the feeling is better than any of you even imagined but you gotta want this and again, I try to focus on looks and creating a look. Working class guys should have different goals from suits in terms of hair, face and of course, tattoos but chacun a son gout says Janey.
