Hi , everyone , im 40 years old and for about 10 years ive being using Finasteride 1mg 3 times per week and i could keep my hair since then (through 10 years until now i lost some hair but not that much and before that when i was in my 20s i was losing hair very badly so doctor told me to start finasteride at that time) , recently instead of Finasteride i tried dutasteride 0.5 mg twice a week for about 3 months but during these 3 months i feel that i lost my sex drive and libido very badly so i stopped taking both dutasteride and finasteride one week ago , since then im thinking about this question that how long i should take these kind of pills (until end of my life?), because im 40 now ,and if i stop these pills will i lose all my hair in several years or not , because ive heard and see that hair loss for most men after 35 will be very slowly and all people around me (all my familly) got bald when they were in their 20s ..

It will depend on how aggressive is your hair loss. When you stop taking finasteride hair loss will resume. For me, finasteride is like a "pause" button on my hair loss...

So, you keep taking it as long as you want to keep your hair - sadly.

You’re fighting your genes with finasteride.

There’s no age where your hairloss will stop, don’t know why people get this idea that it won’t be a problem after certain age.

The reason your hair falls out is because the hairs are sensitive to androgens, that’s their genetics. So as long as there are androgens in you, your hairloss will happen.

Your genes dictate what Norwood you will go to, what that means is what hairs on your head are sensitive to androgens and what are resistant/indifferent. This is why some people end up nw3, some nw7 and some people have aggressive hairloss in their teens ending up nw7 in their twenties, that’s how sensitive their hairs are.

The thinking is with old age androgens amount is reduced. Sure but the hairs also aren’t as resilient due to old age, oxidative damage over the years etc and the sensitive doomed to fall hairs just can’t deal with the damage like they used to in younger age and even less amount of androgens is enough.

That said, you should stop it when you just don’t care about hairloss as much, when you’re settled in have kids wife etc, or perhaps get a hair transplant from body hairs.

Sorry mate, it’s a lifelong struggle. Blame your genes. You can safely take a few months break from the drugs though then resume

There's the option of possibly migrating to topical finasteride further down the line, if the day does come to ditch oral finasteride.

You can Check out some of @debyne posts for some info.

You will lose ground, try adding horny goat weed and zinc or try topical finasteride that’s what I been using since 2010.

should i worry about long term usage of finasteride (for decades) , specially about prostate problems and cancer , is there any research about if you take finasteride for 20 ,30 years and side effects on prostate or ?

As 20YearsOnGin suggested, Go topical man. I’ll never touch oral finasteride again. My hair is the best it has been and I have zero sides, unlike what oral gave me for 14 years even though it was effective.
