when to switch to dutasteride?

After six months of 1mg finasteride and 5% minoxidil, I continue to loose ~50 hairs a day just in the shower. Now % 50 loss via thinning, mostly on top, but no sides from the finasteride. Only 23, and would like to hang onto some hair for bit longer, so I'm contemplating switching to dutasteride.

Have I given fina a long enough chance? Should I stop the minoxidil as well, or continue it when switching to dutasteride?

i think if u haven't seen any sides from 5 months on finasteride and your hair loss doesn't seem to be better, it might be a good idea to go on dutasteride. i would suggest you taking 0.5mg of dutasteride every 3 days.

Have you looked at the charts comparing dutasteride dosage effectiveness to finasteride dosage effectiveness. 0.1 mg of day per dutasteride is equal to 5 mg a day of finasteride. You're only telling him to get on 67% more than that in taking one dutasteride every 3 days. It will take quite a long time for him to reach steady state taking only 1 dutasteride every 3 days. That's a bad idea and he will lose more hair than he needs to.


I suggest taking dutasteride every day. 0.5 mg of dutasteride every 3 days is not a gigantic improvement over 1 mg of finasteride a day like 0.5 mg of dutasteride every day is. So take 0.5 mg of dutasteride a day and you'll reach steady state faster.
and continue the minoxidil. You shouldn't tell people to get on dutasteride only every 3 days. Yes yes I know about sides and we don't know the long term effects etc etc, but 0.5 mg a day is best.

Why do you recommend to load your dosing of dutasteride? Just curious. When I switched, I continued the use of finasteride but only .5mg in addition to dutas daily for 2 weeks.

the graph i saw showed 3 per day for 10 days is good. If you do 2.5 per day I'd aim for the 7 day mark.

I think a loading dose is more necessary for people who want to take it twice a week. If you take 2 per day the first 3 days and then go to once a day I think you will be fine.

a loading dose is for people who switch cold turkey. If you take finasteride and dutasteride together for at least 2 weeks, you should be fine. If you just want to take dutasteride twice a week, I'd do both for 3 weeks.

That I did. Who can beat 78 cents per pill for dutas including shipping? haha. I did it for two reasons: one to help out CCS who has been valuable to this board, and two because I ordered all these dutas from inhouse for $100 and then forgot about them when I went to get Avodart from the pharmacy.
