ok so im looking through all the bald role models out there (all 5 lol)

i see

yule brynner in films (1956 - 1978)

then there was

Telly Savalas in kojak (1973-1978) - he was a middle aged man

then

Patrick Stewart in star trek (1987-1994) - he was a middle aged man

so my question is when was it ok to be sly, instead of horshoe, i thought it was the early 90s that sly was introduced, but if so, how were people able to watch brynner and savalas and not freak out or feel wierd seeing a guy with no hair on tv.

Bryner and Savalas were not accepted as mainstream looking guys. They were seen as quirky most of Bryners roles were as some kind of warrior from another age, when did you ever see him dressed in a suit playing an everyday guy living in the present.
Same with Savalas he was Kojack and thats it he was'nt a versatile actor playing varied roles.
Even in the 80's head shavers were looked upon as weirdo's and freaks. Google Errol Brown thats about the only guy I remember from the 80's and that weirdo from Rocky horror.

Hair was much longer in the 80's I remember when Rocky4 came out and Ivan Drago's hair was considered extremly short now it would be pretty normal to say the least.

actually i've been researching brynner and he does appear to be a normal guy in a suit in modern day present, anastatia as example.

but i didnt watch the movie, im just looking through them all and seeing what roles he is playing.

but yeah from what i've read he wasn't that popular and movies weren't as big then, it was more Kojak that people assocaited baldness with.

but that show Kojak, i find it hard for people to watch that show and have him be a normal guy (ok the actor only payed one role but still), being a normal bald guy set in that current era.

seems strange.

but yeah i guess it was ok for one tv character for a bit of fun.

also its worth it to note that sttar trek 1987-1994 patrick was i think practically bald, he had a very close cut horshoe and was practicliy sly anyway.

i guess this tv show was actually before people did this.

so what year would you say it was ok to be sly, like as example if you saw a guy balding people would tell him to shave it all off, this is the social norm etc.

are you also saying that people in the 80s did go sly, but it was considered wierd, so say balding men in the 80s. 70% were shoe, 20% combover, 10% sly and were freaks.

overall what would you say the ratio was in 1980, 1985,1990,1995 (assumeing 95 was the peak since corgan and stipe were bald)

patrick 1987-1994 actually sported a NW6 clipped down to a #3 or something (sorry im not sure) type with grey hair.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ST_TNG_1x124_001.png

upon my research corgan and stipe revealed sly in 94/95.

corgan was 28
stipe 34 (he was a hat guy 30-33 i beleive)

but yeah, did that mean when people saw corgan in 95 bald they freaked, i dunno, 1997 seems too late, how can these guys get away with it 3 years earlier and be famous with it, surely youd have to wait until its mainstream then have famous people a few years after, not the other way around?

but yeah you are from that time so you will know when common people did it, its good to hear it from someone who lived a NW4+ since 22 and watched people go from horshoe to sly, you will have the exact era in your mind for when sly was in.

would you also say that people in the 80s had combovers a lot, like did everyone hold on to their hair with combovers to avoid the horshoe.

also any idea when combovers started, i know that bobby charton had a combover in the 50s, i beleive he was 29 and totally bald with a massive combover.

also i thought they tatooed vin diesels head so he wan't bald in every movie, was there ever a movie where he was actually sly?

As far as famous musicians go, Scott Ian started shaving in 1990, although he still rocked the ponytail back then. He was 27. Kerry King started shaving around 1994... he was 30. David Draiman has been bald as long as Disturbed have been "on the map". Matt Caughthran of The Bronx was bald way before he hit 30. Well maybe The Bronx isn't exactly mainstream lol.

thanks for that, yeah im planning to document the famous musicians who are bald, including elton john who was practicaly bald at 29, wore hats in his 30s then was a wigger 40s+

but IMO scott ian and kerry king aren't really famous, there still club level bands, i only consider 3 musicians famous (arena sized)

REM
Smashing Pumpkins
Joe Satriani (shades guy)

keep in mind they play alt rock/metal where looks dont count.

but yeah its nice to take note of the rest as well, but i see those two ones as being the only and main force of bald rockers!

also im not sure how big judas priest are, illl have to look into that, i think disturbed are pretty big, but still club level, nice to note though.

^ Midnight Oil's singer has been bald by choice (at least I think he's BBC) forever, does that count? AC/DC had a bald drummer in Chris Slade for a while in the early 90's. Coldplay's drummer Will Champion is bald.

When did the drummer from Radiohead started to shave it?

Isn't Phil Collins the patron saint of balding musicians?

Speaking of Radiohead, Thom Yorke must have had a transplant or possibly a wig. He was NW3-4 in the Karma Police video circa Ok Computer release 1997.

Phil Greenwood I think started shaving around then. I remember from The Bends period 1995 he had some hair and then started to shave it all off when they brought out Ok Computer.
