I;m a long time occasional lurker( I look here maybe once every couple of weeks or so) and I decided to actually post something about my battle and success with hairloss.
I started thinning at the age of 18. I suppose I actually started developing a receding hairline at the age of 16 though. I remember on my first driver's liscence picture I had to slightly maneuver the hair around my right temple so it didn't look so high. The hairline directly above my eyebrows remained straight and thick. Only a little indention on each temple was evident. My hair remained this way until I turned 18.
I recently looked at my high school senior picture at age 18, and my hair didn't have the thick look to it like it did at ages 16 and 17, even though my hairline went a little back at the temples it was still thick at 16 and 17. It had a thinner drier look. So anyway, after high school ended I started using Saw Palmetto and Rogaine 2% and later 5%. This didn't do sh*t and over the next 6 months I noticed that at this point my pillow was covered every morning with 20-25 hair strands. I became very paranoid and depressed at this point in my life. This is when I started looking on the internet at http://www.regrowth.com, and hairsite.com,etc. This was all before this site even existed.
I finally came across Spencer Kobren posting on some of the messge boards and I sent him an e-mail. Back in these days Kobren was just getting started and he answered more e-mails and had alot more time. He thought I was so depressed that he gave me his phone number and had me call him. Kobren gave me hope and told me all about Propecia and encouraged me to use it now. He also eased my fears of the drugs potential side effects, which were discussed heavily on the forums since Propecia was just about to come to the marketplace.A month later I had my prescription for Propecia and have used it or Proscar since.
Results:
My hair is pretty much about the same as when I started at age 19 over 7 years ago. My crown is slightly thinner I believe, but to tell you the truth, I look just about normal for someone 26 going on 27. My hairloss is minimal, but I still have the receded temples. As I age I find I care less and less, but recently I quit using minoxidil and my crown thinned, so I'm back on it for good now. I guess I needed a reminder that it would bother quite a bit if I lost the rest of my hair. I will continue using finasteride until a cure or something better comes along.
Predictions:
I believe my hair will maintain itself as long as I take the finasteride and keep up with the minoxidil. I probably won't lose any significant amount of hair as long as I use the drugs. It may SLOWLY thin gradually, but I don't look for significant loss.
Conclusions:
Rogaine alone didn't work for me. Propecia and minoxidil has done wonders. I recently quit minoxidil and stared thinning slightly, so I will continue to use the rogaine propecia combo as it seems to be effective.
