Will doctors easily prescribe Avodart/dutasteride in the US for hair

I see the commercials, I know it's available, but I have yet to try it.

But will doctors easily prescribe it for hairloss? I'm asking because when I first went in there asking for a hairdrug for hairloss, they looked at me weird, like I was crazy, wanting "prostate" medication for hairloss.

That just shows their ignorance. But then again, they probably spend all their time on other conditions/drugs, and never looked into this, who knows.

Anyways, If i want dutasteride/AVODART for hair, will they prescibe it to me or not? In the United States?

And if they do, what's the dose that I should take?

Also, isn't dutasteride basically like taking two proscars? I'm not even sure if it's just a higher dosage of finasteride, or if it's a totally different substance altogether?

Would taking higher doses of finasteride really help with hairloss, or just cause more side effects?

Thanks.

Avodart is hard to get prescribed by regular docs for baldness. You are right, most will not even know what you are talking about.

However, you can get prescriptions from the medical wellness center if you are approved by one of their physicians. It is expensive though, and obviously not covered by insurance, because it is for hair loss, not prostate problems. But yes, they will give you a prescription for genuine avodart that you can fill at any US pharmacy like Walgreens, Eckerd, CVS, etc.

As to your question about high doses of propecia, it may help ever so slightly more at the 5 mg dose (proscar), but the side effects simply are not worth it. Chances are at this high dose, you will get gynecomastia (at least your chances go up here), and more sexual sides.

Avodart is related to propecia, but its different. Its not a higher dose of propecia. Actually, its more powerful than propecia, but is prescribed at the .5mg dose I believe (although in trials, 2.5 was tested). So it is half the dose of propecia (in terms of mg) but much stronger. Different drug, different chemical, despite the obvious similarities.

Hope you find what you are looking for and have success.

thank you very much for responding. But, does avodart/dutasteride also have similar side-effects to propecia?

Thanks.

try your gp.
my gp has no problem in prescribing any drugs for me as long as I take a full blood test every year or two.

The sides are similar. With Avodart, you have a slightly higher chance of sides, but keep in mind, that the risk is still relatively low. Plenty of people take the drug without any problems. Of course, a few unlucky individuals can get sides, varying from mild to bad, the most concerning being gynecomastia and impotence.

Avodart is a dual 5 AR inhibitor, unlike propecia which only inhibits type II. The long term safety of Avodart is less known that that of Propecia, but from what we know as of now, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Avodart at any dose inhibits both type I and II 5 alpha reductase. Even at 5 mg of finasteride (Proscar) still only type II is affected.

There is some debate about whether inhibiting type I is necessary. Personally, I think it helps. Avodart seriously lowers your DHT levels far more than Propecia. But there is higher risk of sides in doing this...of course, at the same time, also an increased chance of helping your hair more.

My derm suggested Avodart, not my general practitioner. Suggest you try a dermotologist or two.

Avodart

Many hair transplant surgeons are big believers in Dht inhibitors. I have heard of them prescribing Avodart(not just Propecia).

That is not true.
