Will eventual sides appear immediately after taking the first Propecia pill?

Hi friends,

I have been on Propecia/Finasteride for approx. 6 months now with OK hair growth results (.5mg the first 4 months and .25mg the last couple of months).
Exactly one week after I took the first .5mg Propecia, I had sex with a girl without any problems. But since then, I have had trouble maintaining my erection when having sex and I rarely wake up with morning wood (even though I have been on only .25mg the last couple of months)

My question is:
If it IS sides I am talking about, then shouldn't they have shown already the week after I started on .5mg when I had sex? Or is it possible that they will first appear later, so that it actually IS sides I am discovering about now?

I am looking very much forward to hearing your answers.
Thanks so much in advance.

Sides can appear after the first pills, after 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or never. And they can worsen or get stable. Everyone reacts different.

Most people who are on propecia don´t experience any sides. However there are some people who although they have minor/ manageable sides such as watery semen and lower libido decide to continue on propecia because for them their hair is more important, it is understandable. But if you have erection troubles...

Therefore, if you are only 23 yo and have erection troubles and no morning wood with only 0,25mg I think propecia is not for you or at least you need a break.
If you decide to quit it seems to be adviceable to do it tappering off in order to get your body little by little used to drug-abscense and avoid possible persistent sides.

That´s only my opinion. The decision is just up to you. I would also recommend you to talk with your dermatologist about these sides you have. Keep us updated!

Thank you very much for your answer, Mevoyacurar.

I'm actually very interested in hearing whether somebody else almost never have morning wood, but still is able to perform in bed?

The case is, that when I masturbate, my erection is fine (still MAYBE a little less from before the treatment, but hard to say). That is the reason why I thought that my problem could be more of a psychological than a physical character?

Any comments to that?

Thank you so much in advance. Your help is much appreciated.

It is obvious that psycological component plays bigger role when you are with a girl. And it is a good signal that erection when you masturbate is almost perfect.

However, morning wood has nothing to do with psycological issues...

By the way, it is hard to tell. Pay attention and monitor your evolution about these possible sides the next weeks then decide whether they are manageable or you are more into tappering off and get rid off these problems. You already know my opinion, if you feel these problems are real I would quit tappering off. You don´t have to quit forever, you can have a break and after some months if you are fine again and you are willing to, you can try it another time. Also have an appoinment with your dermatologist.

Well first of all to mention that I have never taken any drug like this and I never will no matter how much hair will stay on my head simply it is easy to deal with buzzed head than all those sides you will get from messing with body hormones.
Now about morning wood I'm 40 and I have them few times a week and every time there is a woman in my bed I have almost constant erection no matter if we had sex 5min ago.
It is not normal for a young healthy male to have problems keeping erection, and don't be fooled by the label on the drug that only 1-2% have sides everyone who takes the drug have sides but some sides are not so harsh and people tend to ignore them.

Morning woods is just your body's exercise to the penis. They happen or not is not of much significance.
Your issues could be sides emerging or just overthinking.
The only way to be sure is just to visit a doctor.
The forums are good place for advises but you can't get solid proof until you meet a doctor.
Good luck

Morning woods have nothing to do with psycological issues because they are involuntary. And they normally happen.

In fact, nocturnal penis tumescence test is used by doctors to ascertain whether a case of erectile dysfunction is psycological or physiological in origin. They normally occur around 3-5 times during sleep.

Morning erections, nocturnal erections and spontaneous erections take place on healthy men. If you don´t have them there is something going on: probably testosterone levels are fluctuating too much or you have low testosterone levels.

What if you don´t experience morning erections? Are they important?
The answer is only up to you. Obviously they are a normal physiological event in every male and they are needed to penis health; Recent research studies have shown a slight gradual decline in the frequency of morning erections in men as they age. Slight! How much decline can experience a 23 yo man? And Nedester, you are only 18 yo I hope you not to be dealing with erection sides. If you do it is your respectable decision, but don´t tell they are not significant; they are not significant for you.

While I was on finasteride I remember having hard glory mornings and as I have read on here most people don´t have sides regarding erections neither. Therefore, If you are a 23 yo and there isn´t another cause apart from finasteride it is probably due to that. As I said maybe finasteride is not for you or it is time to give it a break. But it is your body, you decide.

Consult your doctor.

I really appreciate all your answers. I havde decided the following plan:

1. Today, I start taking .125mg Propecia (down from .25mg) every day. I will do this for approx. 10 days, and if the 'sides' are gone, I will stay on this dose.
2. If the 'sides' are not gone, I will go down to .0625mg every day and see how this goes for 10 days. I the sides are gone, I will stay on this dose.
3. If the 'sides' are still not gone, I will go down to .0625mg every other day for approx. 10 days. If the sides are gone, I will stay on this dose.

If the sides are still not gone after .0625mg every other day, I will stop the treatment completely. If the 'sides' still appear at that time, obviously, I will consult my doctor.

Would you guys like me to update in here how it goes?

Again, thank you so much for your help. It's so valuable to have some people around that understand my situation -- even if they are virtual :)

Cheers!

It seems a really good plan. Patient and safe. Good luck cutting those 0,0625 mg! Don't give up! :D

I rarely wake up with morning wood

Well that isn't caused by performance anxiety. My Propecia ED starts a day or two after taking my first pill. I think I would probably not take Propecia for a few days, and see if the morning erections return.

Also, how old are you, and are you taking any other medications? (SSRIs like Prozac, saw Palmento, etc)
