So I'll give you some background info, then I have several questions, and at the bottom is my "family history" of hair of the men in my family and my photos.

I'll be 27 in a very short while, and I didn't want to mess with my hair at all until I hit 30. First noticed hair loss when a hairdresser cutting my hair made a comment about how fine it was when I was 21. At first I immediately used some off-brand topical stuff (not foam, just liquid) where I thought it was thinnest (which turns out to be the same spot I'm asking about in this thread). But I only did that for a month before I decided I was too young to start doing that and let it go. My hair's been almost the same ever since. Maybe a little more thinning on the hairline, but not by much.

So the part that bothers me is on the right side of my hairline (the circled part). If this small area was re-grown/thickened up, I'd be a solid Norwood 2 and wouldn't be on this forum because I'd be fine with it. Basically I'd like to re-grow whatever I can there and try to thicken it up and just maintain really. I know I've lost some on the left side, as you can see, but that side is fine for now as far as I'm concerned. I've been thinking about starting Rogaine Foam to achieve my goal.....any other suggestions to add to it or use instead of it? I'd rather not be taking any pills/prescriptions because of the side effects.

I figure I'd just use the Rogaine Foam for the next 30yrs or until they come out with something better. I'd really like to try to stay a 2 or 2a for as long as I can. Anyone else remember having about the same amount of hair and being around my age and now you're in your 40's or so and have had success with your hair?

Anyone else just been using Rogaine or Rogaine Foam for 5+ years?

Family hair loss side notes:
My dad(48yrs) and 1 of his brothers(40yrs) are Norwood 2a, another one might be a 3(53yrs), and his 3rd brother(50yrs) has a full head of hair basically. My grandfather on that side is between a 3v and 4, and his hair is pretty thin, he's in his 70s though. My uncle and grandfather on my mom's side both have pretty full heads of hair, though my grandfather's is a little thin since he's in his 70s.

Thanks!

I know Rogaine works for some. I did not give it enough time to work for me, because it irritated my scalp and I was miserable.
Prescriptions have always scared me too.

You have Androgenetic Alopecia and it does not get any better. Your darker hair/ethnicity is one factor I have observed in people that makes the Androgenetic Alopecia process relatively slow for many. You still have dense hair on top even after 10 years when you were first alerted by your barber-That's in itself is amazing. finasteride will probably help a lot and might grow hair in deeper end of your temples; minoxidil alone might also help but you need to try yourself as everyone responds differently. minoxidil alone will retard or pause further recession and might help with temples but at minimal density. If you are really concerned, then I would suggest you think over and become resolute to use both despite the side effects that might go away or at least subside.
