Metabolic acidosis is rampant today. modern diet and hairloss connection has been frequently discussed on this site . it was found in some studies that bald people had higher incidence of metabolic acidosis and chronic kidney disease. Renal acidosis is common in industrialized population and is the main cause of metabolic acidosis.
Human blood pH is tightly regulated between 7.35 to7.45 ,it is slightly at alkaline side.pH 7 is neutral. Human body works efficiently at pH 7.40 .
Oral sodium bicarbonate therapy is very helpful for reducing metabolic acidosis.many studies had shown improved kidney function and blood parameters in people treated with oral sodium bicarbonate.bicarbonate in blood and extra cellular fluid helps to remove acid from tissues and increases oxygen uptake.scalp hypoxia is a frequent finding in androgenic alopecia. I think correcting blood pH would definitely help to reduce hairloss and improves overall health because it will increases oxygen uptake in scalp tissue .
What do you think about oral bicarbonate therapy? Had anyone tried it before or have currently under oral bicarbonate therapy.?

Where do you get sodium bicarbonate from? I live in India and would really like to add it to my regimen. Not because I think it could help with hair loss. But because I read a similar post of yours in another thread and was really interested in this acidosis stuff. I'm going to add Metformin into my regimen and have read that lactic acidosis is a side effect of Metformin.
Also, can you also recommend an appropriate dosage? I suppose there won't be any interaction with my existing regime of Bicalutamide and Vitamin C.

Sodium Bicarbonate = Baking Soda

You should be able to purchase it at a grocery store.

sh*t, how did I forget that, LOL!
How do I find the correct dosage for me? Having standardized amount of it in capsules for some particular health condition would be helpful, right? I just don't want to consume a spoonful and develop metabolic alkalosis or respiratory alkalosis.

I was always taking 1 teaspoon in water for heartburn but I did not take it for a long period so I don't know if it may help our cause but it's defnitely a great stuff (kidney, stomach..)and cheap.

Good way to increase your sodium intake and set up for hypertension.

Sodium bicarbonate is baking soda which we use as leavening agent. It is available at any grocery store and is very cheap.
About dosage I would say 1 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a cup of cold water in the morning . don't drink too much water immediately after taking sodium bicarbonate ,it can get into blood very fast.one need it to slowly get into his bloodstream. So with cup of cold water is good. Even if it wouldn't help hairloss it would still help in keeping kidney and overall health.
I am not a medical doctor so do this on your own responsibility.

Sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride: effects on blood pressure and electrolyte homeostasis in normal and hypertensive man.
Randomized controlled trial
Luft FC, et al. J Hypertens. 1990.
Show full citation
Abstract
To test the hypothesis that NaCl and NaHCO3 have divergent effects on blood pressure, we carried out a randomly allocated, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in 10 mildly hypertensive and 10 normal subjects. They ingested a fixed daily basal diet of 60 mmol sodium and chloride, 60 mmol potassium and 14 mmol calcium. After balance was achieved (4 days), the subjects were randomly assigned to drink 3 liters/day of a NaHCO3-containing mineral water (26.2 mmol/l sodium and 33.03 mmol/l HCO3) or a control solution containing equimolar amounts of cations as the chloride salt for 7 days (total daily sodium 138 mmol). All urine was collected. Blood pressure was determined by an automated device. One month later the opposite regimen was followed. NaCl did not influence blood pressure, whereas NaHCO3 decreased systolic blood pressure (by 5 mmHg) in the hypertensive subjects. Both regimens decreased plasma renin activity in the hypertensive subjects but did not consistently influence plasma aldosterone or catecholamines. However, urinary calcium excretion, which was greater in hypertensives than in normotensives, and greater in white than in black subjects, increased consistently with NaCl but not with NaHCO3. The excretion of urate was not influenced by the regimens; however, urate excretion was consistently greater in whites than in blacks. The data show that NaCl increases calcium excretion whereas NaHCO3 does not, even at modest levels of intake. NaCl and NaHCO3 may therefore differ in their effects on blood pressure.

I've been taking Sodium bicarbonate (acid reflux) for years .... still losing hair and having insane itchy scalp.
Have you been taking it daily? In right dosage. ?500 mg daily would not correct a acidosis. 1 gm twice a day could be a threshold in order to control metabolic acidosis.daily 3 gm is needed in order to control acidosis for many. It might have slowed your hairloss but you were not aware of it.if you didn't take it you would have lost your hair faster than you did.
