Propecia sides VS Birth Control sides, interesting

Just realized, for all the talk and panic over the occurence of sides in Propecia users, I've just stumbled upon articles claiming the birth control pill has a rate of 3% to 6% sexual side effects. These drugs are handed out to literally any young woman, yet all the commotion over Propecia's 1%-3% side effects.

This study puts the numbers for birth control at 32%!

I've heard talk all over boards comparing the sexual dysfunction numbers of Propecia to the numbers of SSRIs (where the perceived percentage is probably north of 40%), but birth control is practically handed out to any young woman...it's so commons we've referred to it as The Pill for decades now. Yet, a higher instance of sexual side effects.

For all of the talk of 'you just don't know what it's doing in your body' and 'it's not a good idea to **** with hormones,' isn't that exactly what's been happening with birth control for decades? And it's widely used, I've never dated a girl not on some form of birth control.

Just some food for thought this morning from someone who's been waffling on the decision to try Propecia for some months now.

Any thoughts? Counter claims?

The issue with propecia is that a lot of people argue the report of ~1% sexual side effects are underestimated.

The whole birth control vs Finasteride thing has been discussed a few times on the forum. Think about the role a man *typically* takes during intercourse, and the role a woman typically takes. That should hopefully illuminate why sexual dysfunction tends to be a bigger problem for men than for women. In any case, what exactly is the logic here...that because a good number of women experience libido issues from taking the pill, that men should be happy to deal with Finasteride induced ED? Indeed, it is not a good idea to screw around with your hormones, but an unwanted pregnancy has the capacity to screw a person's life up as well. Risk vs reward. Is hair worth the possibility of transient or potentially long lasting sexual dysfunction? That's a personal decision, and should be respected as such.

Anatomy differences aside, women tend to have lower levels of sexual desire at baseline without the possible sexual dysfunction effects of BC pills. For us men, it's noticeable immediately because we constantly think about sex.

I believe men think about sex 20 - 25x a day, while women are at 5 maybe? That's a big difference. Women could go a few days without sex and not think about it twice. Thus, it's noticeable to us immediately.

According to some movies on prescription drugs the manufacturers can do a trial however many times and just resubmit the ones that show the most favorable results and lowest side percents. I dont know if that is true, but it does make you wonder how accurate those percentages are. Going from a small sample in a study out into the wild of millions of people is just a huge leap though. You will never accurately have percentages for that with how poorly medicine understands all this crap, and it varies by person
