Prostaglandins have been shown in studies to be influential in hair follicle cycling. In the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia, hair follicle cycling means greater number of hairs in growth phase at any given time, resulting in thicker hair.
Bimatoprost is a analogue of the prostaglandin PGF2a. It is hypothesized that it acts on the prostamide receptors in the hair follicles, as well as having a broader biological action. In turn Allergan hopes to establish that Bimatoprost stimulates hair growth and increases pigmentation.
