hej guys,

i've been taking propecia for 10 months now, and the thing I can state is that my temples have receded a bit more. Also my frontal hairline is looking a bit thinner than before.
since month 8 I have introduced Avodart to my regime, but I still take propecia everyday.

So my regime since month 8 is: 1mg finasteride every day; monday + thursday = 1x 0.5mg avodart capsule

Well, since I started using Avodart my head is itching a lot more! I really don't know what is up with that... also I am shedding more hairs than I used to.
I also shed hairs from my sideburns, they have gotten thinner too (the area just under the temples).

Does anyone have any experience concerning this? I really don't know what to do anymore :s.
I am at the 10 month mark, should I not be seeing positive signs by now ?? :-O

(ps, my only problem is my hairline and temples, the rest of my hair is still very thick)

I hate this curse :'-x

Thanks in advance guys!

If it wasn't for the itching I'd say you are going through a dutasteride shed, but itching is not a good sign.

I've recently integrated dutasteride into my regime pretty much the same way you have (.5mg once every 3 days, 1mg finasteride every day) and have noticed my itching has disappeared entirely. So I have had the opposite reaction to you and am feeling very hopeful.

I suppose it's up to you if you want to ride it out. Your case is puzzling, as you should only be getting better results with dutasteride. Do you use nizoral or anything else?

Hi Lead Farmer,

Thanks for the comment.

I really don't understand where the itching is comming from :s, I use nizoral 1-2x a week and leave it in for 2-3 min before washing.
maybe I should increase my avodart intake to 3-4x weekly? :-/

When you started taking avodart, did you do a loadig fase?

thanks.

Anyone would give me some information about itching and finasteride relationship? As far as i understand, if you have itching while you are on Finasteride or Dutasteride, it wont work on you.

I started taking dutasteride once every 3 days from the start. I probably could have introduced it to my system a little slower at say once a week, but I felt pretty safe at once every 3 days. It's working really well for me so far.

Does nizoral help with your itching at all? Do you notice increased irritation the day you take dutasteride or does it get worse after not taking it for a couple of days?

Nizoral does help with the itch, but that doesn't mean the itch disappears completely after use.
I really don't know if my head itches more or less the day I take Dutasteride... I'll try to take Duta 3 days in a row to see if that will redusce the itch somewhat. If the itch get s worse, than I can state that Avodart is causing it, right? While on propecia I never had such an itch as I have now, that's really strange to me :s ...

You'll need to figure out when the itch comes on or when it is at it's worst, once you figure that out you'll know whether dutasteride is the source or not and where to go from there.

Well, I took dutasteride 3days in a row, to see if anything would happen. And the itch seems a bit less, but then again I am also using nizoral 3days in a row now... So I can't say. :s

Hej lead farmer,

I have taken duta for 5 days now (0.5mg a day) and I can say that the itching seems to be less ... I don't know if this has anythin to do with the nizoral shampoo which I used 3 days i na row. But now I am going to quit the nizoral for a week or so. and just try the dutasteride and see if the itch will return.

grtz

Sounds like the best way to go, that way you can isolate the dutasteride and see what effect it is having on the itch (hopefully it's positive!).

Where do you guys get dutasteride? I really want to make the switch as propecia (yes name brand) is seeming to lose some effectiveness.

I feel like 4rx.com seems pretty good but have read some negative reviews...

balding89, there is no point in taking dutasteride. the pseudohermaphrodites have the same biological hormone profile as a finasteride user and pseuoherms never lose hair. stick with finasteride only IMO

Not exactly true; psuedohermaphrodites have an almost complete lack of the 5AR enzyme, meaning they have almost zero DHT. Finasteride only lowers DHT by 65%, where as dutasteride is closer to 95%.

wuffer pseudoherms, have alpha 1 reductase. they still have dht from alpha one. when they become teenagers it is specualted that the alpha one binds with the testosterone, and it makes them look more manly, and hence they can reproduce. they have normal levels of testosterone, alpha 1, and little levels of DHT from alpha 1. a finasteride user has the same hormonal profile. finasteride block type 2 almost 90%. the psudo herms only advantage is they are 100% free of type 2

so basically during puberty the type 1 binds with testosterone to make the little dht they have.

a finasteride user block DHT to about 70%. 30 % is from type 1 wich doesnt cause hairloss. when merck studies mk 386 a type 1 inhibitor it gave no results in hairloss, and it even brought dht levels to the same as dutasteride.

Yah, you are probably right when talking about Serum DHT. But Avodart does inhibit more SCALP DHT than Propecia... So avodart should be more effective than propecia, but then again avodart does raise scalp testosterone a lot more!

I know for shure that propecia is not a strong enough med to halt my receeding hairline, so that is why i'm trying Avodart. Bur now I am shedding hairs all over my head... and I can tug them out verry easily. :-s
Well heyyyy :) I'll give this another 2 months (which will be my 13th month on propecia and avodart), if by then I don't see a stoppage in my hairloss/shedding, I'll be concedering adding oral spironolactone (50mg). And yes i am serious. I DON'T MIND A RECEEDING HAIRLINE, BUT I DON'T WANT IT TO PROGRESS AND GET WORSE TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN SAY: "I AM BALD" :)

Hey mate, interesting blog I had the same reaction although I was itchy and shedding on propecia for over 12 months I swapped to avodart for 3 plus months and it only got worse and shedding all over my head and eyebrows. I have stopped everything for nearly a month now and still shedding a little bit but the itchyness has almkst completely stopped! Really not sure what to do now.
