In your 40's, its more likely you will get used to finasteride after a few months. Many men have to take Proscar which is a higher dose in their 40's or 50's if they have prostate issues.

I’m guessing the topical just isn’t getting through. 3 days on .5 and I’m really feeling it. No mw, no libido, and a weird feeling of tightness/flaccid stiffness.

On the forums it seems like there are two different narratives:

1. With time sides will dissipate.
2. With time sides worsen and assume a higher risk of permanence.

Is it worth it to have a ‘density check done’ And microscopic photos? Was going to skip the Bauman visit, definitely skipping the PRP, but this is the only place I’ve found that will give me an objective look at miniaturization.

Now even with that it’s pretty clear my options are limited. Most likely will continue on topical for a full year and get him to make a call on the impact of stopping or continuing the oral minoxidil. The shed is still non-stop.

No one can answer this. It’s simply your choice whether you proceed and find out for what happens to you as an individual.
I’m surprised you even get morning wood in your 40’s.

With millions of guys on oral finasteride the sides did not worsen, or else everyone would have gotten off it. What you feel now will stay for about a month, maybe slightly get worse, then two months in it starts to get better. 6 months and your body accepts it. You should feel the testosterone boost at some point.

The other crap you are taking was a mistake.

I accept that I made some mistakes. I listened to about 6 ‘hair doctors’ that told me minoxidil could do no harm... I do believe I ruined my hair with it.

In terms of recovery do people get full function, size back? thinking of testing .25 with the topical. Is there any value in low dose a few times per week with the topical? My hair feels like doll hair when it was black wire two years ago. Super thin on the sides as well.

You may need to start eating more protein, as hair is built out of that.

Eating adequate protein is important for hair growth because hair follicles are made of mostly protein. A lack of protein in the diet has been shown to promote hair loss

I never hear people say this in here, but look it up.

Once i started to eat a lot of protein, my hair thickened up over time.

Ill give it a shot. I think I’m killing my hair with HCG but it is needed to recover for the Finasteride. I such a horrible response. I’m going to tweak the topical dose with hope that I can get some benefits without the sides.

You shouldn't have messed with your hormones so early. Is your hairloss legit? I see younger guys that are maturing and have some hairloss and freak out and jump on eeverything available which is a bad move. I had aggressive shedding on generic propecia, I also had brain fog And lower libido. For whatever reason switching to dutasteride I had zero sides other than some water retention. I would use oral minoxidil, and some of the topicals as a last resort. Many of these doctors dont have a clue and just prescribe things just to cover their ***. I'd use the proven treatments and steer clear of the alternatives for now, oral finasteride, dutasteride, topical minoxidil., 1 or 2% nizoral. And you could also incorporate rosemary oil as a topical which has shown to be as effective as 2% minoxidil without the sides
Your comment about dutasteride having less side effects than finasteride is surprising. I've never heard this before. As someone who wants to take dutasteride but is having a difficult time with finasteride, this seems hard to explain...

That came from the female hair specialist at Northwestern. I don’t think she fully understands Androgens. For two years she refused to consider that I actually had AA, and with hope I believed some of her hype.

I would be interested in what a topical Dutasteride option might look like? I mean some absorption but if localized even 70% it’s better than nothing.

Only noticeable change since Finasteride has been loss of temples, mild depression and occasional ED. Serum DHT levels low and unchanged.

The studies I've seen showed very little difference in how much dht was inhibited between a 1mg and 5 mg dose.
