Hi everyone,

Please, I need some advice on how to stop the scalp itch. I have tried finasteride for over a year, dutasteride for 3 months and minoxidil ( This made the itching a lot worse ). I also use Nizoral, Regen pure nothing works.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do next?

You may have reverse andronism like I think I do. However, I took finasteride for 8 years and had success, but I’ve lost ground 5 months ago for the first time in a long time and am on dutasteride no (still with finasteride) but feel like it may raise my test when I take the dutasteride. I’m sticking it out hoping it’s a shed but I’ve been on it for 5 months and this is when you’re supposed to get the shed, so I’m trying to stick it out. I’ve had the itch every time my hair has receded. I know that when it is there that’s what it means. I don’t even know if finasteride stopped it as maybe my body’s natural process did it. I just was on it at the time. Make no mistake, that itch is balding.

I think the "male pattern baldness itch" (still considered a myth in terms of science), the technical term we use here, is not necessary correlated to genetic hair loss, because not everyone experiences it. I experienced the itch, but even though I had success on dutasteride (maintenance, thickening and regrowth), it was still there. It went away after oral spironolactone (my dosage is rather controversial, but yeah). So far it's a hypothesis.

It could be an underlying health issue for all we know.

I still itch and am having regrowth. I think the itching is just hair fall in a lot of cases and not necessarily inflammation. I think it’s best to pick a regimen and stick with despite itching.

I don’t know if it really helps though, but perilla and nac seemed to help a lot when my itching was bad. That and a tea tree and peppermint oil shampoo that I get from cvs. Nizoral makes my head itch like crazy so I don’t use it

Can you supply the names of the tea tree and peppermint oil shampoo that you purchase?

How long have you been on dutasteride?

I think the itch means hair phases are switching (such as to telogen) and cause a hitamine like reaction. I had this crawling itch on Rogaine foam and lost hair whenever I pulled at it. I stopped and do not have the crawling itch anymore but I also never naturally had it. I would say to take a Benadryl and see if this works or use topical Benadryl (like in an alcohol spray). I do not think this itch means '''DHT is attacking my follicles".

I dont think anything ever really cures it. Just change shampoos often, and maybe you could try RU. I think in some men that get this itch its inflammation from male pattern baldness so its probably related to the receptors so AR blockers might help even if finasteride/dutasteride dont. Just pure speculation though no one knows.

It's funny you say take a benadryl to see if the itch goes away...if I take medicine, even benadryl, my scalp will start itching..especially antacid prescription medicine...but benadryl will make my scalp itch. May be it causes sebum to be released?

Best way to fight the itch I've found is by using anti androgens, and I don't say that lightly. Since starting Cyproterone my itch is about 70% - 80% gone, it could get pretty bad before but now its not usually noticeable which is great because I use concealer now.
