I like the way some people say that dutasteride is unsafe, unless you take it for BPH, in which case it's totally safe. All I would say is that it has regulatory approval in many developed countries, and a safety profile similar to finasteride.

I've never heard of this Prof. Hoffman guy, and I don't know what his agenda is. All I can say is that the Phase II trials showed that dutasteride works well for hair loss, and it works better than finasteride 5mg at 0.5mg and 2.5mg doses.

J Am Acad Dermatol. 2006 Dec;55(6):1014-23. The importance of dual 5alpha-reductase inhibition in the treatment of male pattern hair loss: results of a randomized placebo-controlled study of dutasteride versus finasteride.

BACKGROUND: Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is a potentially reversible condition in which dihydrotestosterone is an important etiologic factor. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of the type 1 and 2 5alpha-reductase inhibitor dutasteride in men with MPHL.
METHODS: Four hundred sixteen men, 21 to 45 years old, were randomized to receive dutasteride 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 or 2.5 mg, finasteride 5 mg, or placebo daily for 24 weeks.
RESULTS: Dutasteride increased target area hair count versus placebo in a dose-dependent fashion and dutasteride 2.5 mg was superior to finasteride at 12 and 24 weeks. Expert panel photographic review and investigator assessment of hair growth confirmed these results. Scalp and serum dihydrotestosterone levels decreased, and testosterone levels increased, in a dose-dependent fashion with dutasteride.
LIMITATIONS: The study was limited to 24 weeks.
CONCLUSION: Dutasteride increases scalp hair growth in men with MPHL. Type 1 and type 2 5alpha-reductase may be important in the pathogenesis and treatment of MPHL.

I've seen positive stories, like JayMan's, Oni's, and Aplunk's. Dr Alan Feller, a hair transplant physician from New York, prescribes dutasteride in preference to finasteride because he claims to have seen far more "success stories" from the former than the latter; Dr Marty Sawaya said "it's possible that over 50% of men will be getting moderate to dense regrowth on Dutasteride, compared to the less than 25% of men who experience these results with Finasteride."

To be fair, Avodart is a minority interest on this board and it is not commonly used to treat hair loss. We should also bear in mind that obtaining it without prescription - which most of us have to do - usually involves buying from an online pharmacy, and the WHO estimates that your chances of getting counterfeit meds from an online pharmacy are 50%. :freaked:

Also bear in mind that Avodart is not a 'wonder drug' for hair loss. Yes, it might be a little better than Propecia, but the operative words are a little better.

There are loads of guys who post threads claiming that "Propecia hasn't worked" or "Avodart hasn't worked" and then it turns out that they've either maintained or gave the drug, like, 2 months or something. To be honest, dutasteride won't work for everyone. But we don't know the response rate because those figures have never been released. I'd wager it's a higher response rate than Propecia, perhaps only slightly higher, purely because of the higher DHT inhibition and better hair counts in the Phase II trial. I can't see why it should be lower.

should be ok to mix antidepresants with avodart

ive been on a range of psyc meds while on avodart and dutas- zoloft, seroquel, effexor, edronax, zyprexa, cipramil.....

then again my mind is such a mess its hard to tell if it combining avodart with these drugs makes it any worse
