OP, this looks like telogen effluvium. Note how there are no bald "patches", and the structure of your hairline is still there. You've just got diffuse thinning. The crown looks thinner because that's where all the hairs go off in different directions (you can see scalp on almost all non-male pattern baldness people near the crown). This combined with the fact that you're 19 means this may have been triggered by a drastic change in diet, hypothyroidism, or something related to that. What's your family history of hair loss?

To be honest with you at first I too thought it was stress triggered Telogen Effluvium as every time I've seen massive shedding have been in times of extreme stress, and when my hair is looking the best is usually around summer (stress free) but there was no way of really knowing and I didn't want to risk it. My diet has been pretty consistent and im pretty sure I have had blood tests for hyper thyroidism.Furthermore hair loss runs in both sides of my family. Only time will tell if my hair improves or not, going to give it 3-4months before I commit to Dutasteride.

Only to my face. I never applied it to my crown or hairline but i'm pretty sure applying it to my face systematically absorbed it and did the same thing as it would as if i did apply it to the hairline/crown. Maybe i should start applying it there instead haha

Also 19, your hair seems to be in the exact same situation as mine. Diffuse thinning, no male pattern baldness pattern, looks identical to that when wet. Do you think you could possibly have CTE or maybe alopecia areata. Check your iron, thyroid and vitamin b12 levels also.

Hey man, it could be CTE nothing wrong with my bloods. I'm susceptible to stress very easily and always notice excess hair fall around university exams. But at the end of the day it most likely is male pattern baldness in a diffuse manner.

you should definitely get a scalp biopsy, i am getting one next week. Itll tell you what you have and definitely will be better then worrying if its permanent

Hey guys, just writing to keep you guys in the loop with my hair situation. I went through that period of Christmas shedding eventually things seemed to stabilize and slightly improve, hair still is no way near as thick as what it was at the start of 2016 but i was looking back on old photos from before i started treatment and in general my hair is still well above baseline. Throughout the years it seems i go through periods of increased shedding where my hair looks terrible, and then stabilization so don't let shedding discourage you. Guess i've been going strong for 3 years now so i guess you can call my regime of Minoxidil and Propecia a success. Below are some photos comparing where i am now with where i was, all photos are taken with wet hair due to the fact that i am a diffuse thinner so hair never looked that bad dry. Cheers guys, will keep you posted on my future situation x

Ironically following from my last post I've been in a period of constant shedding. When I say shedding I'm talking about over 100 hairs from just combing my hair into the sink. I'm under immense stress at the moment and it seems my hair always gets visibly thinner during these periods. It makes me question how much of my hair loss intially was down to male pattern baldness and how much may have just been due to chronic Telogen Effluvium.

Even though I've been through these sheds multiple times a year I can't help but think my male pattern baldness is catching up with me, although every time I eventually recover.

The worst part of this whole ordeal is the fact that in my 3years of tackling hair loss I've only had probably a year of good hair. These cycles of shedding then regrowth then more shedding and more shedding have really made me think whether it's worth it anymore.

Will keep you guys posted X

For those still interested, my shedding never stopped but I’m still above baseline but no where near my hair peak. I guess this is still positive for an agressive diffuse thinner.

Thinking of trying out dermarolling to try and regain the full thick hairline I had at my peak. My other options are dutasteride or oral minoxidil.

Still have never experienced any sides with propecia or minoxidil.

Update for my main thread -

I started Dermarolling towards the end of November. My regime was 1.5mm wounding every Sunday and 0.5mm to increase minoxidil absorption every Tuesday and Thursday night. I would apply minoxidil straight after, even on the Sundays. I have experienced no side affects as of yet.

2 Months in and i am confidence to say that my experiment has been a success. My shedding has been cut in half, even though i still shed quite a few hairs daily, and my hair seems a lot less diffuse lately. Furthermore my temple points seem to be filling in again slowly but surely. There seems to be more vellus hairs than before. I have attached photos below so you can assess for yourselves.

Nice thread brother. I am in the same situation as you at the beginning 19 years old diffuse thinner and probably telogen effluvium . Really sucks since my doctor refused to prescribe me finasteride, the little c***. I thought about buzzing it off but your story is quite impressing. Although you had ups and downs you still maintained and even grew something. I hope I can do that aswell. If it does not help I will have to hit the gym and regularly tan to maintain atleast somewhat good looking. Btw how is your beard growth going?

Well I hope this gives you faith since my hair loss was very aggressive at 19 and now I’m coming on to 23 and I’ve managed to at least maintain if not improve my hair. Tan and hit the gym anyhow, every little helps :)

I’ve been growing out the facial hair for the last month and a half - not amazing but minoxidil really did help.

@centurie ; so minoxidil helped you hairline ?
you only apply it to your beard and get hairline result ???

For my first year of minoxidil use i applied it solely to my face (cheeks and under my chin). This ended up being the best year of hair in my life, i returned essentially back to thick NW0 even though my original intention was just to improve my facial hair.

However after a year i started to lose ground again at which point i made the switch and started applying it to my hair. My hair has never been as thick as it was during that peak period, but i'm still above baseline.

So yes minoxidil help my hairline and my overall hair density.
