Bernadette's face is not ALL wax, it was touched up with a little wax as it was going blackish from the carbon in her coffin. Same with Pio, the face was starting to show some skull so it was touched up. But the main point is the corpse have decomposed very little, and no dead body smells.

I know if h.I was buried his stench would be as foul as this mouth, then spending the next 400 years in purgatory - no offense.
