Thanks for your replies! Yeah Norwood is tragic. I

guess what confuses me is what is meant by hair on “top.” 5, 6, and 7 all seem to have no hair on top. So is the difference how far the crown dips down and if your sides drop? I just want to be a NW5 so I can have hope.

what norwood you at now man?

you can go to a derm now and get your final pattern checked out. or at least have some idea of where your heading

in terms on the crown/sides, it can vary a lot. that norwood chart is just a general outline

ive seen guys with very high sides and a huge f*****g crown dipping way down.

ive also seen the opposite. low sides but high crown

in general though, the higher the norwood, the lower the crown/sides dip

Okay, thank you for saying this because that’s a big part of what is confusing me. My sides appear to be a bit low but my crown doesn’t dip down too far.

I’m diffuse though so it’s hard to say what my Norwood is. I’ve met with 2 transplant surgeons (pretty well respected ones) and they both seemed perfectly willing to work on me. I’d like to think that’s because my emergent pattern isn’t TOO bad, but maybe it’s just cause they are greedy, who knows.

But yeah, thanks again for your comment. The variation in how far the sides and crown dip make me wonder why people toss around NW5 and NW6 with regards to who is and isn’t a decent candidate for transplant. Doesn’t make sense when there’s so much variance.

i would def go to a derm to get a biopsy done. get them to check where your miniaturization is. your crown may not be too far down now but it may get that way eventually, meaning you have less donor hair to work with.

so in general a nw5 is a better candidate because they have higher sides/smaller crown, so they have more donor to work with and less area to cover

its all numbers man. get your scalp checked out and see what your donor area is like. they should be able to tell you what your final pattern is and then you'll know what your options are

We’ll keep in mind I’m 37 and been slooowly diffusing since my early 20s. So I would think my pattern is established and the crown shouldn’t drop more, but who knows.

I did visit a dermatologist to try and get a propecia script. He was pretty useless. He said I had some recession but “some women even get that” and he declined to issue the prescription. But I’ve established a relationship with a few hair transplant surgeons, maybe they can map my scalp out.

What do people think of this guide to what advanced Norwoods can expect from transplantation? It sounds like no one can get the illusion of full coverage, not even a NW4?? I don’t get it.

I’m sorry to beat a dead horse but I still struggle with how people determine with any kind of certainty what their Norwood “pattern” is and how doctors and laymen alike can say that “Norwood blah blah blah can expect such and such result....” It seems like there’s so much variables and variance. I’ve always been under the impression that a NW5A might get a pretty solid illusion of fullhead, this link makes it sound like a NW4 is dreaming to get the illusion of coverage:

the results of a transplant - a lot of it comes down to your hair texture and donor density

The best candidate is a guy with thick, coarse, wavy hair and great donor density with lots of 3 and 4 hair grafts. Someone like that can do say 8000 grafts and get 20,000 hairs out of it and have really good looking hair. I've seen a NW6 have decent looking hair (he was an indian man with coarse, thick, wavy hair)

Other guys have straight, fine, thin hair and weak density without a lot of multi hair grafts which means even 8000 grafts isn't going to give you great coverage/density if you are a NW4-7
