Hi guys,

I've been on Proscar for just over 10years now an I have decided to come off. My reasons being rounding of my face, feminisation look to face, depression and I wish to begin a family.

Can anyone advise how to come off the medication slowly I have been taking a quarter of a tablet for 4 days then miss a day and repeat.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
S

It's not a benzodiazepine. I think you can just stop. It is not addictive.

Yeah that's correct but I'm trying to minimise the shock if any to my hair by just going cold turkey. Deep down I'd love to stay on it but the long term side effects are concerning. The dementia link is scary and I'm being told I look about 22 yrs old yet I'm 36. I defo don't look like a mature man

Which dementia link? Could you please post it? I use finasteride for 19 years, didn"t know about any relation between finasteride and dementia.

Thanks

There are posting of this on the web, I did a general search and stumbled across some info. I just don't think it's worth that risk, I don't even know if the Proscar has slowed my hair loss or not as I'm still receding more at temples and crown

I understand you.

But is there a way to check if finasteride caused any damage in that field? I mean, any neurological test to check if he brain is damaged by dht supression for long term finasteride usage?

Anyway, i think the relation to dementia is not conclusive. I didn"t find any studies showing that it really happens.

What experience of side effects have you had on this drug?? Have you noticed your face being rounder or skin ageing?? It's hard a to explain but I still look like a young boy yet when I see photos it's like I look young yet my skin is older. Obviously as You get older ur face will age but I look different and can't pin point it. I would Love to keep my hair but even mentioning dementia and multiple sclerosis by other just puts me off just in case. God knows what damage to our bodies without normal dht etc

I guees finasteride has some impact on my emotional condition. But yesterday i visited a conceitued derm in my country, who participated in the propecia initial studies and many others that came later, and she asked me to stay with the drug. She believes that all the recent fears around aren"t justificated.

Regarding my face, happens the same thing. I am 42 but people always think that i am 30 years old or even less. But i don't think it has conection to finasteride

And when talk about dementia, are there proven cases related to finasteride or you are reffering to the fears around the forums?

You probably look younger because you still have more of your hair then most men not on it your age. Is looking younger a bad thing would you rather look older than your age? Trust me balding will do that for you if that is your goal.
There is no dementia connection so I dont know your talking about there did your doctor say that? Id imagine you would mention that to your doctor that is why your seeing him to take the drug in the first place.
long term removing DHT might not do anything. I mean it was based off models of people that live without DHT their whole lives so they arent just making that up. It could turn out to be important I guess but same goes with anything

My only concern here would be the water retention finasteride causes in your face if you notice a difference. I dont think it would effect your actually jaw bones but may add some extra puffiness. just calm down on the doses. Blood tests will tell you everything you need to know. if your estrogen is elevated you may feel some fatigue, lower sex drive, water retention etc.

Honestly, i have huge reason to believe all these side effects come from increase in estro and not from reduction in DHT.

its nothing to do with my hair my face seems stuck from when I was at high school. It not a good thin when u look like a little boy and not a man. Depression, brain fog, forgetfulness God knows what else this is doing. I can't win go off it lose hair, stay on and get all these side effect. Taking something that affects your body at a young age just can't be good. I'm defo coming off it, my hairloss is beginning to ge worse on it anyhow.
I've spoken to a hair transplant surgeon and they had said also my hair will never be as thick only 40% density. All these photos are people with fillers, there is no way to avoid baldness simple as that

Dude... NO drug--definitely not finasteride--can change the shape of your face (i.e. your bone structure). That's literally impossible. If your face is rounder/fatter or whatever it's because you've gained weight/fat on your face.

Look at people who take steroids for muscle building their face shape changes ie more defined jaw etc. It makes sense that this drug must do something to us if it plays with hormone balance. IS DHT not need to keep a so called masculine look?

My derm said the same thing yesterday (about people living without DHT their whole life) when i asked her about the connection between finasteride and mental sides.

I use this drug for 18 years and i am very scared with all the things that have been posted around these forums and blogs. But if i quit the drug now, i will become even more depressed.

Regarding the dementia, i didn´t know about that. It was mentionned by the OP. But if you search, in fact there are some articles showing this conection.

BTW, what´s your regimen, abcdefg?

Thanks, sorry for any english mistakes

Rafael

you took the drug for 18 years now you're worried. Have you had any problems that give you a reason to worry within thos 18 years? cause honestly, youve been on long enough to expect that you shouldnt be expecting any new side effects out of nowhere.

BUT, to be honest, you managed to escape baldness for 18 fkn years man, thats a win in itself. Hell, im 23 right now, just got on finasteride 3 months ago and if i could hold onto my hair until 30-33 id be super happy. letting it go would be hard but knowing that i lived the prime of my life with hair would be enough encouragement to just take the leap and get off it, and plus when you're in your 30's and bald, you have alot of company to relate with.

I had the same views as you at your age mate but all i thot of was saving my hair but as you get older u begin to think of future health etc I just don't know what long term damage his stuff can do.. This is medication used for prostate problems which we don't have...ive read of DHT having benefits in Telogen Effluvium level of your moods, muscle tone, skin etc we are removing this basically
