Bryan recommends chewing the pill before you swallow.
thats nonsense, put a drop of water on a pill and see how easily it breaks up...

Pills have been known to pass all the way through without being digested at all. Why take any chance at all? Just chew them up...

Bryan
we have discussed this before, guys, take a propecia / proscar and put it in water, the thing dissolves almost instantly, by the time the pill hits the stomach, it will no longer be intact... now some pills are time released, and it would be probably detrimental to chew them

even just hold the propecia pill in your mouth, it dissolves easily,

bryan what do you think about chewing multi vitamins? would this at all help?

Yes. I think everything should be chewed up, unless it's specifically designed to be a time-release formula.

again, put a multi vitamin in a cup of water, it will fall apart within minutes, no chance it will stay intact through the stomach if water alone has that effect on it

Bubka, I'm waiting for you to explain my mother's experience with her prescription blood-pressure pills! :)

After that, you can explain why it is the California doctor found that ALL supplements (both tablets and capsules) were absorbed better when they were chewed-up first.

That's your homework assignment. Don't be tardy!

i don't know what exactly your mother blood pressure pills are, their capsule, or the filler, but it is likely that they are time released where the capsule and or filler is never suppose to be digested, the active ingredient is released, but the rest dose nothing as it is designed not to, wellbutrin is a perfect example of this, same with effexor

just because you see the pill in feces, does not mean that it was not 100% absorbed

your homework, which is specific to what this site is all about, put a finasteride pill in water, or just hold it in your mouth, see how easily it dissolves, hell, even touch it with wet fingers

There are some tablets that shouldn't be chewed. They could damage your teeth or esophogus. And some tablets are enteric coated for a reason, to avoid stomach damage -- or to be processed in the intestine. Some medications are FAR MORE effective absorbed this way, like wax matrix tablets. A perfect example of this is potassium citrate.

Something like finasteride does dissolve fairly rapidly in water though. In fact, the tablets literally pulverize with very little impact. And I can't see any harm coming from chewing it.

Nice try, but that doesn't wash. I'll have to give your homework a "D".

Remember that when she called her pharmacist and told him all about it, he was in a state of SHOCK over it? He said that he had never heard of such a thing happening. If it were just a wax-matrix pill, or some other time-release formulation, he wouldn't have been surprised at all. He would have explained it to her IMMEDIATELY.

Well looks like you get an "F" then because you did not address anything that i ask... as i memtioned, I HAVE NO IDEA what pill your mother takes, so I cannot attest to that pill specifically, what i did mention was propecia and vitamins, which YOU DID NOT ANSWER, actually it should be an "I" for Incomplete

I would also like for Bryan to address what bubka said, seems like what he stated is being avoided to me.
