IMO genetics give us the type hair (hair density, thickness, shape and colour) , people wth dense and thick hair are less prone to develop common baldness, OTOH the length can be a key, people with longer hair (women normally) are more ressistant, and clearly this is no a genetic trait

There is literally 0 point in a poll. Its basically a fact it comes from either parent. You can get it from either mother or father or both. Which one is more likely is up for debate, but who cares anyway? You got it you got it.

Both my maternal and paternal grandfathers were NW5 and up. My father had fine hair and deep temple recession but no balding on his crown. I think I might have dodged it.

So it’s pretty much a generic lottery with the odds being more in your favor if you have fewer balding relatives.

maybe its not even a sex linked trait... nobody knows. Personally, I think there are many different genes that contribute to hair loss and they are inherited through different means. Some people have 2 (diffuse thinners who recede), some people have 1 unique type (DUPA), some diffuse nw7 etc..

I think more of us should skip the dermatologist and see an endocrinologist. We are fighting stuff way past acne cream.

I think that I had an hormonal imbalance that started right when the beard did, at maybe 18. I would urge you guys who are desperate to do that. There are ways of getting insurance to pay. I just had rampant DHT above the neck. Everywhere else was fine, not too hairy so I must have had the beard or the adrenals causing the dermatitis which stopped when I removed my beard.

It can come from wherever. My dad went bald in his 20s and so did one of his brothers, but their other brother didn't go bald until his 50s. Their dad went bald in his 50s from what I've heard, but i don't know about their maternal grandfather, but I would guess it's likely he went bald in his 20s.

Unfortunately I got my dad's genes. Wish I had gotten my maternal grandfather's genes instead though, he didn't start balding until his mid-30s (while I started in my mid-teens), and he is now 88 and around a NW4-5. His brother though was a NW1 until he died at the age of 89, with only some minor thinning.

My father had ZERO hairloss. Perfect hairline, density, no bald spot at crown. Nothing. I look a lot like him, have his hair type, but I'm balding.

Similar situation here. Round half of the people I talk to say that I look a lot like my dad, and the other half says that I kinda look like my mum. Dad's a Norwood -1 at 53 with godlike hair genetics. He has very little body hair, I've more than him so maybe that could mean something about how strong my DHT or my sensitivity towards DHT is.

People used to ask if my father was the son? My ex used to talk about how nice his hair is.

Grrrr. He's 83 and has every single hair almost like Ronald Reagan. My mother is 80 and still wears it long successfully

Can empathize with this. This is a situation I wouldn't want to be in and it would probably be the hardest part of going bald for me, since literally the only living bald man in my whole family is my 91 year old granduncle. My maternal grandfather was quite bald (A thin NW4A or a dense NW5A from the pics of him I've seen at that age) but died at 68 while I was a toddler.

So I disagree with the ''it comes from your dad'' idea. From what I've read hair loss can come from either side of the family and even skip generations. Some suggest that the paternal family may determine the 5-Alpha-Reductase activity and overall DHT levels, while your mum's side may be the one who determines your follicles' overall sensitivity to DHT. Often when one side has male pattern baldness and the other doesn't the children will have milder or slower hair loss.

Sadly it seems that the poll doesn't have a ''My dad has a full head of hair and I have mild hair loss'' option so I can't answer it. For the record, my paternal family has godlike hair genetics and I was always assured that I'd never go bald. There's only a bald great grandpa (My paternal grandpa's dad) who balded noticeably in his late 30's, early 40's I think? My paternal grandpa died at 88 with Bill Clinton hair. My other great grandpa (Paternal Grandma's dad) died at 102 with a slightly thin NW1. He was 3/4 Native American. My dad is a barely greying Norwood-1 at 53 and my uncle is a NW1 at 48 with unnoticable crown thinning that may have happened due to strong acne meds since he suffered from severe acne as a teen.

On the other hand, my maternal grandpa started balding somewhere in his 30s and had noticeable hair loss by the time he was in his mid 40s. Ended up as a thin NW4A or a dense NW5A at 68, when he died. My maternal grandma's genetics are even worse: She had thin, wispy hair in her 70s and all of her brothers hit NW5A/NW6 by their 40s or 50s. One of her brothers, my 91 great uncle with whom I talk regularly told me that he noticed hair loss when he was 28 or so and decided to start looking for a treatment when he was 32-33. By the time he got married at 36 he was a NW3A and ended up as a NW4A in his 40s. Funnily enough his son is 44 and has a dense NW2. My great uncle says he used to have his hair before he went bald. My mum has good hair for her age, my aunt has unruly hair and is pretty grey but I think that had more to do with the strong meds she's been taking regularly for decades.

In my case I've heard it all my life as well but it's actually pretty obvious, there's some pictures of him when he was younger that are actually scary. Is like I'm seeing myself. Some people even think those are pictures of me but in vintage colors lol

his hairline and temple at 70: IMG-20200104-WA0014.jpeg

Unbelievable, isn't it?

At the other hand, this was my maternal Grandfather hairline at 19 : IMG-20201110-WA0024.jpg

You can see the temples were already receding in a rounded pattern. He reached the NW7 in his 40's

Damn that sucks. But I doubt anyone can reach more than a NW5 or 6 if they start taking finasteride early enough and stay on it. What sucks is that if you have NW7 most of your donor is probably sensitive to DHT and that plays against you if you want to get many transplants. But you could always get a scalp biopsy to know whether your main donor is DHT sensitive or not.

I haven't done a scalp biopsy yet but I'm pretty sure I have DUPA. This is what my donor area looks like

My dad has a lot of his hair left. Not bad for a near 70 year old. Clearly some diffuse thinning. But I don’t think he started thinning until like 50.

My hair is diffuse thinning too but I’m 25

I don’t think that’s DUPA tbh. It looks like somewhat coarse hair that stays in position when you move it. But you know your hair. If it wasn’t like that before maybe you do have thinning there.

What treatments are you on?
