Does inhibiting 5AR cause increase in libido?

I don't care, I've been taking it for 11 months and I am doing perfectly fine and also maintaining my hair for the moment. It might affect people worse later in life as erection quality and libido generally lower with age.
Jesus dude, do you understand the Finasteride, by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase it is not just DHT what you are inhibiting ?! You are inhibiting, AT least, another 8 hormones that nothing have to do with libido. PLUS, DHT is not just about libido.
Jesus, Finasteride is really damaging your brain, or was already damage ? Can you even THINK !? you sound like propaganda comercial of Merck from the 90s !. lol .

controlling levels is important for some people which can absolutely be done naturally. To attempt to block it completely is imo insane................... ''my hair count has gone up with saw palmetto and red ginseng''

After 25 years these threads are pretty pointless, but i'll add this.

Generally if you are on finasteride I doubt the average persons intention is to block DHT completely so I'm not sure who you think is doing that?

If you have been able to stave off reaching a Norwood 5 over the last 20 years naturally then that is commendable achievement,

but the idea that everyone on 5-Aris could just drop them tomorrow and replace them with things like saw palmetto and red ginseng, is fairly ludicrous.

I've already mentioned this same exact thing in another thread, for myself and i'm assuming many other long term 5-Aris users, they are like an total on off switch for hair, after a few weeks grace period the 20 years worth of hair that's been artificially held in by them will be rapidly dumped into their breakfast cereal and they will be effectively bald within 6-12 months.

So you can see why, when I see people arguing that you can achieve those kind of results with lucky crystals and ginseng, I'm going to roll my eyes and take their pseudo hair loss cures with a pinch of salt.

I have full respect for anyone using finasteride when it's working and not giving side effects. I was stating my experiences and how what I've tried over the years have affected my hair, my libido and my general well being- which is what the theme of the thread was about.

When you say these threads are pointless, on the contrary I feel when anyone does 'suggest' something new outside the big 3 they get hammered and many users of medication jump on it calling it out as snake oil. There are plenty of snake oils (I jumped on a few in my younger years) in the marketplace, many scammers out for money, but having 20 years experience of reading these and many other forums and having tried a lot of these things, I have personally found a method that works for me but who knows, i could go bald within a year.

Yes high DHT is bad for some people's hair health, and yes finasteride can help some people hold onto their hair for longer. But it does have side effects for some people as DHT is very important, and there are alternatives which may also work for some people which do not give these side effects.

For example I took heavy dose of EPO a few years ago, shedding dropped, hair seemed to be doing good, but libido and mood was low like when I took finasteride (probably due to rise in estrogen). So it wasn't worth it. I'm now in a similar situation without the low mood etc. But the point is I tried it.

It's about trying and finding out what works for an individual, the problem is it takes months to see results and know for sure. I would recommend anyone stopping finasteride if it's working, could be disasterous for their hair, unless theh could incorporate something else before stopping finasteride but this would be very difficult to do.

Not going to argue with any of that.

Its more about when a thread starts suggesting people on 5-Aris with no sides, are some how making the wrong choice, that I find pointless,

as its always going be difficult to convince somebody that has never experienced a reduced libido on 5-Aris that they should ditch them & swap to something natural instead.

I can definitely understand this.

Imo everyone has a natural level of DHT, and the varying amount at which this is reduced with meds or natural supplements will inevitably affect everyone differently depending on what level is achieved once someone is taking something over a period of time. So someone with naturally high DHT and who is also susceptible to male pattern baldness might be suited to finasteride etc. Whereas someone who has naturally lower DHT would be better with something milder to control DHT.

Even when I take a higher dose of Saw Palmetto or eat a lot of pumpkin seeds I feel a slight increase in fatigue (which I contribute to reduction of DHT) its taken me years to fine tune it and find a level which seems to be working for me. If I didn't have the sides from finasteride I would probably still be taking it years later.

Think is the amount you inhibit , you are inhibiting a 70 % or , worst, almost a 100 % with dutasteride . Worst part, people use it without a blood work before to know where is their DHT, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, etc. And, hair loss don't mean that your DHT are high, may be, they are actually normal. If not, everybody should start to bald on their teens, cause is when you have the highest Androgens levels.

Have you even tried finasteride?

Yes I think its about finding a balance, which isn't easy. For me its been trial and error. Maybe I would have regrow hair if I'd stayed on finasteride but I'd bet my sex drive would also be much lower. I've not had tests but try to control my DHT rather than reduce it to much. If I stopped taking natural treatments to control DHT and went to gym every day I know I'd have even more energy and be horny all the time but my hair would suffer! Even a couple of heavy gym sessions increases my sex drive so I try to limit that and incorporate cardio which has the opposite effect and actually mildy lowers testosterone. All a balancing act for me.

Yes i totally agree with you,its a balancing act.I went from 1mg/24hrs to 1mg/32hrs and sides went away, almost.

May be , we don't need to lower DHT all the time, but yes, is trial an error . Pop a pills of propecia or dutasteride daily and pretend that you are not having side effects, is the easy way ;) .

There's meant to be a peak accumulation achieved at around 0.8mg, so theoretically if that's true, the majority of people wouldn't ever need to take it in any dose higher than that.

whether or not 0.8mg EOD works as well as 0.8mg ED though, is hard to tell.

Yep, I use the old, wash 'em down with a beer trick, that way I can blame any brain fog and impotence on the alcohol.
Has a similar success rate as when I accidently break wind then point at the dog.

I followed the older threads about finasteride. on here and the only thing i am sure of, is that there is a large gap between theory and practice. For me every day and a half seems to minimize sides.Have you experimented with different dosages over the years?I am not talking about topical.

Not really as until the last few years I had always been taking a quartered Proscar (or quartered generic 5mg) every day and kind of forgotten I was taking it.

I'm getting older now though, so might try weaning down a bit.

I've since swapped from 1.25mg ED to the Standard 1mg ED, but doubt I will lose any gains if I went down to 0.75mg a day.

the next step after that would be taking 0.75mg every other day, but so not sure about that yet.

It all sounds like a small differences, but if the results stay the same I could probably get away with quite a bit less than the 10mg I was getting through every 8 days while on Proscar.
