Finasteride and dutasteride are considered to be "irreversible" inhibitors of the type 2 enzyme (but not of the type 1 enzyme, which is just a competitive type of inhibition) because once either one of them binds to a molecule of that enzyme, that specific molecule is essentially destroyed. It won't produce DHT again. Of course, it will eventually be replaced by newly synthesized enzyme molecules.
