Cricket is limited to very small number of countries. 1.6 billion of 2.5 billion fans come from 3 - 4 countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. I will hesitate to call it a truly world sport. Cricket has potential to become popular among other nations but ICC doesn't seem to be interested in introducing it to other countries.

There is no such thing like world sports.
People like to play or watch whatever they like.
No one can be forced to like this or like that.
Here people don't give a single fcck which nations don't play cricket.
Same happens in US were people love there own Football/baseball/basketball.
No outside validation required.
In India, there is absolutely nothing in comparison to cricket.
Football Game is played over 100/150 countries and still almost no one cares here.
Football makes small mark only during Fifa world cup were most sports fan from India either root for 1)Argentina or 1)Germany. 2)Brazil 3)Spain or Italy.4)Portugal.
Today was champions league final and my Facebook Timeline has no cheers for Real Madrid.
Even South Africa vs Sri Lanka is trending higher with no spot for Football.
