Has Anyone Gained Any Positives From Hairloss?

I hate hair loss.. the prospect of being a shell of myself is a haunting image. male pattern baldness has more negatives on a man than almost anything else in this world.

I'm not looking for silver linings.. but, an example.. I would say that losing my hair has boosted my knowledge of the world. I see reality more accurately. I see through things more deeply. I'm more tuned into the negative undertones of the world and feel I'm not easily trapped.

Actually, the above isn't a positive.. It's just another burden.

Before my hair loss hit me, I used to be arrogant towards women who were below my level in looks. I wouldn't even talk to them or acknowledge them even when they tried to talk to me. I used to walk around with this "I am better than them" attitude. Hair loss though extremely depressing, has been a very humbling experience for me. It brought me to the ground. I actually started treating the same women I wouldn't even look at with dignity and respect. I started to look beyond their looks and now I try to get to know them as human beings. I still wouldn't date them as I don't find them attractive enough but at least now I show them the respect that they deserve. That's the only positive thing I can think of. Otherwise hair loss has been a nightmare. I am NW2 to 2.5 and I am still so stressed about it as I can clearly see it's impact on my looks. I can't even imagine what some guys on this forum who have gone up to NW5 or 6 have experienced. They have my deepest sympathies.

No positives. All the "knowledge" that I have gained from this sh*t is stuff I wish I didn't know.

Ya, that kind of sums this post up.. better to be a delusional guy with everything than a guy that sees things for what they are but doesn't enjoy the best fruits of life.

..but.. just maybe, the knowledge gained now will be able to turn the tables later in life to a greater degree.. If you're not too far gone or have destroyed yourself by then.

"Joy"? Absolutely not, I can't even remember what it feels like to be happy. My job and my hobbies only make me less sad and depressed, that's all.

I guess I could relate.. The better I get at something the more it makes me realize I'm not "good enough" to be "elite" at it.. I have a lot of potential in many ways. Kinda like the fat ugly guy that kills on guitar, but the pretty boy that plays 1 or 2 chords and isn't actually talented will still draw more attention.

I learned how much looks matter to other aspects other than romantically. This lead to me starting to do much more for my appearance than before.

Positives:

-It has made me more empathetic towards other people and I now understand that looks can affect a persons life.
-It has taught me to take control as much as I can - focus on treatments and other areas of my life.
-It has taught me that hair isn't just about looks but also about identity.
-It has shown me that not all hair loss sufferers are equal - and that some people will dislike you for having more hair.
-It has taught me that I am ageing and that I mortal (a lot of twentysomethings never even consider this).

All seeing reality has done is show me that hair is even more important than I ever realized, especially when you don't have much else going for you looks-wise. I definitely want to return to being delusional again.

As far as upsides of my hair loss go though, I haven't looked at a razor in years. That's all I got unfortunately.

The benefits come when you 'beat' hair loss, if you can beat it.

If you can survive hair loss, any other problem in your life will seem insignificant.

The problem is, you tend to forget that. I got used to my hair transplant and I sometimes catch myself stressing fullheads' problems.

Hair loss will also give you perspective, and as others have said in this thread, you'll end up seeing reality as it is.

You can't BS yourself that looks don't matter or that personality matters after hair loss.

You can see the quality of your relationships dwindle right before your eyes, and you think: "Wait, I'm still the same person on the inside, so why are women so bitchy towards me and so eager to leave me now?!"

No more filters, I think it's a good thing, living in reality. Everyone living in delusion, even a little, will have to pay for it sooner or later. It's not healthy.

It's no wonder Buddhism encourages you to see reality as it is, to accept it, to realize that life is suffering.

The less delusional I am, the better I feel in the long run. And hair loss was a brutal wake-up call.
I actually enjoyed reading this post, Fred.
You made some fine points.

Balding gave me a new perspective on how precarious and thin the mutual perception and judgement amongst humans can be.

It may be an interesting discovery. However I think none of these acquired notions can ever make up for the lingering feeling of anxiety (and/or depression) that any balding person, more or less consciously, more or less markedly, suffers from.

It made me realize how short-lived our youth is and understand what aging feels like. If my hair transplant turns out well, I'll be back to square one and fully educated about fighting aging.
