Hello All,

This is my first post although I have been a member for a few months now and I have been religiously reading on this discussion forum for about six months. Anyways here is my story.

I am 26 years old. When I was home visiting my parents this past Christmas I happened to notice two stray hairs on my right temple that were just chilling by themselves and then after further investigation I noticed a hair in the very front of my hairline all by itself as well. Now my Dad went completely bald by the time he was 19 years old he tells me and he has been giving me sh*t ever since I was sixteen that I was doomed (I think because I gave him so much crap when I was growing up for being bald), so anyways I have always assumed that I would eventually start losing my hair. My Mother has two brothers and both are completely bald, nothing on the top only on the sides, so this didn't help my expectations either. So when I noticed these stray hairs I became concerned and I showed my temples to my Mom and Dad while I was home and much to my horror all they could say was "oh yea you definitely have some recession going on" and then I had my Mom check the top of my head and again "Yup I can see a little thinning there too". My Dad of course chimes in "I'd get a wife as soon as you can", he's kidding of course.

So, in the course of one night I went from not ever having given hairloss a second thought to a rush of concern that would only build from that day on. My first idea and action of intervention was to make an appointment to Hair Club For Men, having seen the commercials and all. I went in to their office and it was one of the more shady experiences I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The guy that talked to me looked like a complete sleezball and after he told me about the treatments we talked figures and the sh*t was ridiculous. Not to mention it seemed as if he could care less about my situation and more about throwing me on one of their "therapy" lines as soon as possible. Also, their "therapy" is minoxidil and saw palmetto and some shampoo/conditioner. Anyways, I digress. I left telling them I had to think about it, but being as freaked out as I was and willing to do anything to keep my hair, I knew I'd be back soon. Luckily, however I spent the next couple of weeks researching on the internet going from site to site. This is when I began to find out about propecia and rogaine and the successes people were having. I also found out about the pissed off people who had dealt with Hair Club so I was fortunate enough to make the decision to never go back there.

After I continued my research for a few weeks I came to the conclusion to that Propecia was my best bet, with the best chances at success and the least amount of effort to use. This took a lot of convincing due to some sites pumping up the figures for libido/erection problems, but I figured I wouldn't be getting any girls without the hair anyways so it was worth the chance.

I began Propecia on 2/24/2006 and right away felt better for having done so. But, being the OCD kind of guy that I am I spent everyday staring at the mirror and convincing myself that things were only getting worse. Bear in mind also that although I saw some thinning on top I was not worried about the crown at all, my entire hairloss fight was directed at my temples and front hairline.

So after almost 3 weeks of telling myself things were only getting worse I decided it was time to throw the book at the hairloss and add Rogaine. Now after readnig through this site that that was a dumb move, but what can I say Im only human and I felt I needed to do everything I could and ensure my success. I begain applying Rogaine to my temples and front hairline only on 3/13/2006. I had been applying it for about 3 weeks when I started to notice little hairs popping up on the left side of my head and into my temple. These hairs today are terminal non-vellus hairs, they aren't super thick but they are everywhere on the left side. No such luck on the right side, unfortunately I am convincing myself everyday that the right side is only getting worse .. funny thing is though when I started I thought the left side was worse so maybe things are just evening out.

So, now I begin staring at my crown and thinking things are getting worse (OCD again) .. on 4/4/2006 I begin dumping the Rogaine on my crown where I swear I can see the beginning of a white spot on my head. Now, I am pretty sure I have a cowlick back there and I have a vicious one in the front as you will see in the pics. So I always figure what looked like thinning in the back was a cowlick but I wasnt willing to take the chance.

My crown is why I am freaking out the most today and mostly why I decided to finally write a post. I have gone from what appeared to be a little thinning to an almost half dollar sized area of whiteness. I have read all about the shedding and all but I cannot believe how much has dissapeared and you can see in the crown pics I will post. I have no choice but to continue with the Rogaine as I see it so I can only hope it is true what they say and that it will grow back thicker.

Well, I didn't intend on writing this book's worth of an entry .. but as much time as I have spent thinking about my hairloss and deliberating over it I could write a frikin novel. Some might think mine is not that bad and it may not be, but I started all this so it wouldn't get any worse .. although the crown is so damn f*cked up now.

Here are my pics, I bought a digital camera for the sole purpose of documenting my hair loss and have taken 3 sets of pics .. I didn't have it initially so I don't have true baseline pic but the march pics are pretty close:

Oh and please someone tell me the big honkin white spot that has developed in the back of my head over the course of 2.5 months will grow some damn hair, unreal.

Thanks - J

hey i think your looks awesome, i wouldnt think you were balding if i saw you. Your regime is strong so hopefully things with get better, it takes time so you have to be patient. Your lucky you caught you hair loss early! As for the vertex of your head, to me it just looks like were the hair parts (naturally), so dont worry to much. Goodluck

Dude i would quit minoxidil and just use propecia.

You have a crown that looks perfectly normal.

Give propecia about 12 months - remember this is a long fight and if you have agressive male pattern baldness then you want to leave options open for the future, ie. don't put all your eggs in one basket...

Seriously it looks thick as hell still so Propecia is all u need to help maintain what you have.

hello hello and anyone else,

So I am pretty sure I definitely jumped the gun starting on Rogaine and ever since I started I have been debating as to whether I should stop or not as I wasn't sure if I needed it exactly.

After reading the couple of responses to my story I am again wondering if I should go ahead and stop using it and rely on Propecia for the time being.

My only question regardint that is the fact that I have already been using Rogaine for 3 months on the front and 2.5 months on the crown ... is there any concern that I will lose a lot of hair from stopping? It only appears to have helped with hair frowth on the left side so Im thinking I may lost those little guys but that would be ok as long as stopping doesnt induce some massive shed everywhere else.

Let me know what you think... I would really like to stop Rogaine if I think Propecia will do the trick alone and I think it may. But I don't want to be one of those guys that stops part of their treatment mid way through only to regret it. Just not sure If in 3 months I have already invested too much of my hair into Rogaine.

My story has a lot in common with yours.

I'm also 26 and my baldness pattern looks almost identical to yours , except I haven't started propecia yet ( side effects scare me). I'm starting to think Minoxidil only makes hair worse really. May consider dropping it later though.http://www.hairlosstalk.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?t=27339

Yeah it's weird some football players get bald faster than normal , just think of Gilardino , Shevchenko , Emerson , and oh Cambiasso , he has a very disgusting male pattern baldness , but he doesn't seem to care.

I will have Cambiasso's hair line in 2 years if treatments don't work :(

Oh, and "disgusting" is a crap way of putting it mate

I couldn't possibly find a more "suitable" term than "disgusting". Look at him mate. Is that a usual BP ? I don't think so. The least I could say is it makes me feel unpleasant. curse male pattern baldness !

Gee, man... you don't look like you're going bald at all!

And really... a lot of guys recede a bit at the temples. Even when they do hair transplants, they won't cover it all in especially when you're in your 30's or 40's.... because receded temples is normal at that age. Mine did the same... then stopped... I hope  But my crown is now thinning.

And hey... you look like you'd have no problem getting a girl

No. It doesn't. How much time have you given it? It's probably just your genetics but you are blaming it on the minoxidil instead.

Well , I've been on minoxidil 5% for 6 months and 4 days to be exact. Isn't it a little strange that I haven't even maintained the hair I had when I started ? Shedding has stopped 2 months ago but no regrowth here.

Well if it doesn't work for me , why do I get all this unwanted hair all over my body and bushy eyebrows ? Should I expect to see some real results later.
I sure as hell hope so.

if you are maintaining then maybe it is working for you- certainly not hurting in any case.

Who says I'm maintaining ? I'm absolutely sure my hairline has receded like 1.5 cm further since I started treatment , somehow I can't deny the fact that my hair looks thicker overall but that's not why I buy minoxidil.

I have the impression that receding is much, much more difficult to stop or reverse than diffuse thinning or vertex thinning.
