I thought diseases have to impair function to be considered diseases.

It is the impairment of a structure. The dermal papillae cells, keratinocytes, and dermal fibroblasts to be more specific that make up a hair follicle.

The vast majority of dermatoligists are completely uninformed when it comes to hairloss. Myself and many, many others have experienced this 1st hand. The average veteran user of this board will have mucho more knowledge of hairloss and effective treatments then your average derm will.

The vast majority of derms are not uninformed. What most people don't realize is that basing your opinions from what you see on message boards does not accurately reflect all derms. Simply put, you are only going to hear about derms on a message board if they piss someone off. Who starts a thread saying how great their derm is.......its a waste of time. Saying derms are lousy based on what you read here is like taking a poll of George Bush's performance at the democratic national convention.

I've met maybe 15 derms in my life and shadowed a handful. The majority don't really know what they're doing when it comes to male pattern baldness. That's a fact.

Well most don't specialize in it. Mine knows a fair amount about male pattern baldness, but he specializes in skin problems, as it seems most do.
