Karl Pilkington is a really chill guy who i’ve always admired as someone who truly and authentically never cared about the fact that he is bald.

here Karl tries on a wig and muses on the impact of having and not having hair, something that is usually not something he wastes his thoughts on.

Honestly, it’s kind of heartbreaking watching that. There was a genuine smile creeping across his visage at the end there.

As soon as I started balding, I recognised that Pilkington’s bitter personality was massively influenced by his terrible hair loss. I think he was nw7 before 30. Ricky Gervais literally introduced him to the public as the man “with a head like a f*****g orange”. I’ve seen much the same bitterness in other fully bald men. There can be something very austere about their character; you can see there is no fantasy nor smile about their countenance. Perhaps because they know those follicles on their scalp are vanquished and likely not coming back. They know they will never look truly young again.

yeah i guess this might sound stupid as f***, but when i had a full head of hair i would fantasize about being some kind of hero or saving some kid from drowning or something, or ending up in the public eye somehow. you know when you watch a film with a handsome NW1 hero in it, you can imagine it being you. when i lost my hair and became NW5 all those fantasies dissapeared and you just become bitter.

This is Pilkington around age 30

The entire basis for the comedy of his "character" is that he is a grumpy 70 year old in a young man's body. Hair loss can do that to you though, to varying degrees. My mentality and outlook certainly aged once the diffusing really kicked in. It's difficult to have a bright, sunshine disposition, brimming with optimism, when the top of your head is see-through underneath a light bulb.
