Minoxidil Irritating Seborrheic Dermatitis

So I have been using oral Finasteride, liquid Minoxidil and Nizoral Shampoo for 10 years now and everything has been solid. A month ago I travelled for six weeks and due to all the right conditions, came back with seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp for the first time in my life. It is red and itchy, but no dandruff, and really is not bad at all until I apply the Minoxidil, then it becomes itchy like crazy to the point that I sometimes have to just go wash my scalp with cold water, Nizoral, and rosemary conditioner in order to sleep.

I took a few day break from minoxidil to let my scalp heal, and it felt great during that time, but after three days began getting worried it was becoming too long a break from minoxidil and started applying again. I know it is the Propylene glycol and/or alcohol that is making this worse, and likely my scalp is too dry and has too much sebum being produced. I have thought about switching to minoxidil foam, but have read many different threads of it not working as well and people having problems with it. Any suggestions on how to keep applying minoxidil to keep my hair but not irritating the scalp? Nervous switching to foam or oral as it could risk losing hair for something that is basically just a minor, itchy rash, but have also read that seborrheic dermatitis can also get pretty bad if left for too long.

Other aspects of my treatment I have been doing for years: oral Biotin and Krill Oil, Lazercomb every other day for 12 minutes, and a liquid topical I apply of B6 and Zinc called Zix that I make myself. The Zix does have some alcohol in it for absorption, so I have been applying it only once per day instead of two. It doesn't seem to make my head itchy really at all compared to what the Minoxidil does.

Thanks for any help!

Hi your regime is very like mine i had the burning /itching on the scalp for a while so I went to see Eva Proudmam she is based in the UK
She recommended Tony Maleedy juniper scalp therapy shampoo and this worked a treat for me and i also use Tricotyne + EP capsules for scalp conditions.

The shampoo worked great and hopefully available world wide and she may post overseas on the tablets.
I also crush up Certrizine tablets and add to my minoxidil as this is a cheap antihistamine but is widely known as being good for hairloss. This stops the body attacking its self and it may be your hair thats the target.
I also take a couple of these a day for good measure. It works well for me im now 57 and have a good head of hair ive been on finasteride and minoox since i was 24 /25 i laser cap every other day also.
Good luck with it

Thanks! How much Certrizine (or any antihistamine) should I add to my minoxidil in terms of one cap per ml? This sounds like a solid idea. I will take a look at that shampoo and Tricotyne. I did just order some MCT oil as I was reading on a seb derm reddit this is one of the few oils that for sure doesn't feed the fungus on the scalp and can help.

hi there isnt a science to it i crush up 3 to 4 small tabs with the back of a spoon and tip it in and shake it up every time you apply it .

Go for the Certrine as its been linked to help hair loss.
i sometimes use a dermal roller also to get blood flow to the scalp.
Eva Proudmam the woman i see said to stick to oral finasteride tabs and minoxidil liquid for the scalp as its far more effective than using the combination where the minoxidil has finasteride mixed into it.
If you want to make your hair look thicker use a cover up aerosol the colour of your hair spray in and blend in roughly with a damp cloth takes a few seconds.
This may give you a boost and make you and your hair feel better until it thickens up.
Dont block your folical’s though.
Eva Proudman does various hair products shes very good.If you can afford a blood test it may be worth it as you could be some not getting all you need to grow the hair.
Good luck with it and keep at it.
ive attached a picture it does look ok when brushed lol im 57
Regards
David

I went to a chap on Harley St London a guy called Hugh Rushden he is a world renowned Trichologist and is still there i was 23/24 when i started on it and i still buy from him now.its just a nightmare to go and see him and expensive travel wise so i go to Eva Proudman shes a 40 minute drive and she has been on TV over here ,watch her on ‘the hair clinic ‘ probably on you tube.
All i can say is try the shampoo it gave me more or less instant relief i understand your concern about staying off the minoxidil for to long i dont how long that it should be left off for.
Certrizine crushed up in distilled water has its own benefits when applied to the scalp as a cure for hair loss so it should calm your scalp for a few weeks as a rest from the minoxidil.
Have you not got a trichologist you can go to for an examination/second opinion?
There isnt an exact science for this its all trial and error i wish they would find a cure for it for simplicity we have an alopecia drug coming out here but its mega expensive apparently something like a £1000 a month.
cheers

That’s crazy. So he knew about finasteride benefits for hair several years before propecia even came out? What dose did he have you use back then since proscar only came in 5mg?

i still get the 5mg tabs and cut into 4 so a quarter of a tab a day im not that precise with it and sometimes miss a day but it seems ok brushed my hair in the attached pick its very bushy but id rather that than none i suppose.Try and find a Trichologist ,
When i went to see Eva with my scalp burning she took pictures of my scalp/hair and a year later she showed me the latest pictures against last years on the same screen and there was visibly more density now that was very pleasing.
Cheers

Were you on 1/4 tab of proscar when you first started?

Your hair looks great. Did you ever have a transplant?

yes that has never changed ,no never had a transplant i really do think the Certrizine in the minoxidil helps but you could split some minoxidil off to another bottle and do a sample and see how you get on before you go balls deep with it

Do you still use propanol and topical Benadryl? Saw your regimen button listed that

Hi i used the propanlol for burning scalp but it wasnt that effective the shampoo was the best i could find that was more or less an improvement within an hour i did try all sorts of stuff to but ive stuck with that for over a year and no complaints.
The benadryl again is an antihistamine but the certrizine does that orally and topically and way cheaper

Do you have burning scalp from seb derm? Or something specialized like tricodynia?
