My dad who is almost 60 has thick hair for most of his life. In the last two years, hes lost a ton of hair in the norwood 5 pattern. Does male pattern baldness just work this way sometimes, not kicking in until you are much older?

basically, male pattern baldness can activate at any age? there is no age after which you are safe? Thats really crzy. i guess it shouldnt be since baldness is not that well understood...

this friend of mine...his dad went bald at the age of 55..went straight to a NW5.. my friend started thinning after he went through a period of stress regarding the girlfriend and exams at the age of 20.

yes.. no age for it.. can come whenever you trigger it or maybe even without.

What I want to know is what can change so suddenly at age of 50?

Some possiblities:

1_ The follicles suddenly become sensible to DHT??? (hard to believe, do you think after 50 years they can suddenly become sensible?)

2_ The body starts to generate more DHT due of a bigger prostate or another reason???

I asked the same question before and nobody answered it, I hope someone can clear it up. I'm sure someone knows the answer.

In my oppinion it's the same as with every disease. As you get older your DNA chains get shorter and shorter and you get more susceptible to diseases. I think it's the same with hair.

Same thing happened to my dad, had a full head of hair untill 48 than went to a Norwood 4 in a year. Then he died due to organ failure because of his alcoholisme, so i am thinking that might be the case.
