Regarding the sun exposure theory -
That could be the reason why baldness developed even if there is no direct cause-and-effect relationship in living people.
You can take a baby Giraffe and raise him in captivity so he never needs to use his long neck to reach tree leaves. He will grow a long neck anyway because the trait is programmed in.
Baldness may have been 'programmed in' to help deal with low vitamin D in the winter time. But that doesn't necessarily mean it will help our hair to get more sun/Vitamin D now.
