Both Propecia and Rogaine can "regrow" some hair. Just look at the Propecia.com website to see photos of visible regrowth from the clinical trials. However, the consensus is that Rogaine regrows more hair, over the short term. Bryan posted this summary of results a while ago:

The Glaxo trial of finasteride and dutasteride

Finasteride... +72 hairs, six months (12.0 hairs/month)
Dutasteride... +108 hairs, six months (18.0 hairs/month)

Various topical minoxidil studies

(1) 2% minoxidil... +425 hairs, 12 months (35.4 hairs/month)
Also: 3% minoxidil... +372 hairs, 12 months (31.0 hairs/month)

(2) 2% minoxidil... +273.4 NONVELLUS hairs, 12 months (22.8 hairs/month)

(3) 2% minoxidil... +101 TERMINAL hairs, 13 months (7.8 terminal hairs/month)

(4) 1% minoxidil... +149 hairs, 6 months (24.8 hairs/month)
Also: 2% minoxidil... +175 hairs, 6 months (29.2 hairs/month)

(5) 2% minoxidil... +233.8 hairs, 12 months (19.5 hairs/month)

(6) 2% minoxidil... +151 hairs, 4 months (37.8 hairs/month)
Also: 2% minoxidil... +324 hairs, 12 months (27 hairs/month)
Also: 3% minoxidil... +166 hairs, 4 months (41.5 hairs/month)
Also: 3% minoxidil... +338 hairs, 12 months (28.2 hairs/month)

These minoxidil "reclaimed" hair numbers you've given, for example:

(3) 2% minoxidil... +101 TERMINAL hairs

That's 101 hairs in what size area of the head? If you say the entire head, I'm going to throw my treatments in the bin now. heh.

I think it was the standard 1-inch diameter circle, but Bryan posted all that data originally. I also doubt whether some of the minoxidil studies were using the same robust hair count techniques used in the Propecia trial.

It is 1 diameter circle.

Just to answer some previous questions and comments:

--I go through about 1 1/2 cans of foam a month.
--I don't plan on ever stopping my usage of the foam. It's gotten me this far and I wouldn't be confident with just the propecia alone. Although in theory it makes sense, I don't want to risk it.
--I do anticipate some shedding on top. I know those hairs are not at 100% regrowth so they will need to fall out and come back stronger. But I feel like I'm at a point where I don't need to worry about it effecting my esteem. My life used to revolve around staring at the back of my head with a mirror. Now I may look at my bald spot once or twice a week, just to see what it looks like. It feels good to focus on more important things!

Great job dude! Do you apply the foam all over the top of your head, including your hairline? Or just in back?

First let me say congrats on the growth. But you will absolutely not maintain the gains of minoxidil with just finasteride. Very bad advice. Stay with what is working for you.

I second H/B - that was horrible advice. Do not entertain that idea for a second - it just doesn't work that way. TRUST US!!!

Yeah. Makes sense to stick with my regimine. I want to keep this trend going for as long as possible.

Tim, to answer your question, I apply the foam everywhere. As you can see from the 'month 1' picture that was basically the hairline, the top, and the back. That's also how I split up the application as well. Basically I work in a glob of foam into each area. That way I'm not rushing to spread a whole bunch around my scalp before it dries.

That's great to see that you have had success. I have a questions though if you don't mind:

Did you go see a doctor about your hairloss? If so what was the verdict from him/her?

Absolutley no doubt you were balding, but I'am wondering if it is talogen effluvium as a guy who sits beside me in work has the EXACT same hairloss pattern, hairline intact, just a decrease in hair thickness. And his doctor said he was suffering from talogen effluvium, and my doctor said the exact same thing to me after I had my car crash.

Did you get your blood checked for excess DHT/Cortisol/Insulin?

Thanks for the post, quite inspiring!

That's an interesting question. I did go see my general doctor to get the prescription for propecia, but we never did any tests or blood tests.

Does Nizoral 2% shampoo actually help with the hairloss or is that just to give you a more comfortable feeling scalp?

It sucks that you need a doctor's prescription to get finasteride. :thumbdown2:

Your "doctors" are total idiots. This is a classical male pattern baldness pattern, no Telogen Effluvium. With Telogen Effluvium you are thinning equally all over the head.

These pictures frustrate me. I am taking the foam for 3 months and I didn´t see anything positive, just a bloated face!
