Gardener, would they have American football on the big screens in the bars in Cancun? I know Cancun is popular with the Americans so hopefully they will. When i went to the bars in New York they always showed NFL games on the big screens and this is how i got into watching American football. There is nothing better than watching sports with a few beers in a sun kissed paradise - always a winner! :)
I'm SURE that there will be some American football on television down there, but keep in mind that its only played a few days a week.

On Saturdays, college football is played.... I actually prefer college football! Although the teams are made up of university students and not professionally-paid, older and bigger athletes, there is something about the pride and passion of college football that is appealing. Throw in all the ambience of the pomp and traditions of each of the schools, the big marching bands constantly playing, the ravenous hoards of drunk students filling the arena to the brim, and the atmosphere is electric. On a typical Saturday there will be scores of college games running all day and all night long.

On Sunday, the professional NFL teams play. The first games of the day start at noon Cancun time, then there are a set of games that start at 3pm Cancun time, and then there is the evening game that starts about 7:15pm Cancun time. Finally, there is one Monday night game, which also starts about 7:15 or 7:30pm Cancun time.

Have fun!

Yes, and I've explained ad nauseum in previous threads why that's the case. However, I feel that as the world grows smaller and smaller, football will gradually supplant soccer as the world's number 1 spectator sport. It may not happen in MY lifetime or YOUR lifetime, but I think it's inevitable.
-----------------------------------

Well good luck with that...

Also, why is NFL called football? A player doesdn't even kick the ball/egg/ovum!

A player _does_ kick the ball, dumbbell! :) I suggest you try watching a game of football, for a pleasant and informative change.[/quote]

Ok. I'm aware that a pleyer does kick the ball dufus, but it's not exactly the prevalent part of the game is it?? Soccer is a sport where 90+ percent of the interaction with the ball is through kicking.

All true, although I do believe the French, Spanish, Portugese, and several others besides use a variation of 'football'. Which spreads its use far and wide.
I know.... I was just in a cantankerous mood yesterday.
Missing oni? He talks fondly of your time together....

Cheers Gard! I have to admit that i like college football as well. I was over at my gf's house and she has got ESPN America and I was watching a game last Sunday morning (i don't think it was live) and it featured UCLA vs Tennessee. Like you said there are lots of students there getting drunk and having fun and it makes me wish i did my studies in America. It was a good game but I didn't watch it for long as my gf wanted to watch Hollyoaks (a soap opera over here in England). I don't have ESPN America at my house but whenever i go back to my gf's house i will see if there is any college football on :punk:

We are leaving to go to Cancun next Tuesday morning so I will be able to watch all this weeks NFL games over here including Cowboys vs Giants on Monday night - deffinitely looking forward to that one. I go for 2 weeks so at least i will be able to see 2 weeks worth of NFL in the bars in Cancun. Anyway, cheers for the info Gard :pint:

Noone has influenced me in liking American football. The reason why i have started to enjoy watching the sport is because i now understand the rules. Before i didn't understand all the stoppages, the yardage etc that you don't get in rugby but after watching the games on sky i have finally understood all the aspects of the game. I come to realise that rugby and Americn football are completly different sports whilst before i understood the rules i thought they were the same except for the helmets and shoulder pads etc.

I love football as well. I have been a season ticket holder at Charlton for years so I am not one these glory hunters that supoorted Liverpool in the 80s, Man U in the 90s and now Chelsea. I am a true football fan and my bedroom is covered in memorabilia (scarves, shirts, hats, programmes etc) and i will always be a true football fan so I am not saying that I prefer American football to Soccer. I am just starting to enjoy another sport in Gridiron.

That's exactly what I was saying several months ago when I was making comparisons between American football and soccer! One British poster (I forget now who it was) had been making disparaging remarks about football, and I was doing my best to explain the aspects of the game. But then he said something about how English people simply don't understand why there are so many "stop-starts" in football that do nothing but hold up action in the game; when he said that, I just threw my hands up in the air, realizing that I was wasting my time trying to explain something to someone who had NO CONCEPTION AT ALL of what the game is about!

You can't really appreciate the game until you understand the fundamentals, and it _does_ sound like you've figured that out for yourself, Dave! :)

It does take a while to grasp the nuances of this US football lark when you're starting from scratch. About a season of one or two games a week did it for me - I like to think I would've caught on somewhat quicker had I not been watching in the early hours. But I am prone to bouts of self delusion....

oni, what's with the head-shaking?
