I'll say this about Viviscal; I've used for a couple of years. I even stopped smoking cigarettes because it's said that smoking effects the effect of Viviscal. It did not do **** for me. I repeat....did not do ****. Might work for men or women who don't suffer from male pattern baldness though.
It actually helped you to stop smoking so it actually did help you.:) For me, it has really slowed down my shedding but its only been 2 months.

It appears that the vast majority of research was carried out on female subjects (with positive reported outcomes), which led to this product being lambasted on the forums over the years. The above study however was carried out mainly on males, with good results if taken at face value . Published in the Journal of International Medical Research for what that is worth. Small sample size (n=51 males and 4 females) and inherent bias in the hair count test are among the risk factors.

This study is actually really impressive.

I didn't see much regrowth in the before and after pics, they basically did a comb over and said look how much it filled in! I DID see that the hair quality was improved however!

This supplement is can be broken down and made much much cheaper, with forms of nutrients that are better absorbed and utilized in your body.

Eat healthy, excercise add
msm + molybdenum (no upset stomach from msm)
oysters (primarily zinc/copper)
omega 3
vit d3
liposomal vitamin c
silica (from mineral water NOT horsetail best brand is fiji)

I tried Viviscal for one year. It costs 50-60 euro for sixty tablets. You're directed to take two tablets a day for three to six months, thereafter one tablet a day.
So this will cost you fifty/sixty quid a month for upto six months and 25/30 euro for each subsequent month.
Is it worth it? Well in my opinion, no. Would I recommend it? No. Not worth it for the money.
You'll get NO new regrowth, just a little thickening of your hair.

I started a 15mg Zinc Picolinate supplement three months ago and achieving a better thickening affect with a fraction of the cost.
It says on the Viviscal website that 81% of customers would recommend it. I ain't in that stat. But by all means give it ago if you want to buy a quite expensive thickening supplement.

What is the rationale behind Zinc? How long can you stay on Zinc... do you need to take breaks, etc?

there is flimsy evidence of zinc inhibiting DHT, but on several studies it actually showed an increase in DHT and testesterone

because is dose dependent, in high doses inhibits dht, and in small doses is an hormones regulator (so its effect depends on what you're lacking)

so whats is high dosage?
this is a very good question.
i'd say depends on your hormonal profile but, over 50mg of elemental zinc is high (and should be integrated with copper and interfere with absorption of iron and magnesium). you should not integrate that much if you're not lacking.
pure elemental zinc does not exit on the market, you need to calculate the % of elemental zinc from the form of zinc you choose to purchase (picolinate and bisglycinate the better).

i dont know if i can put it here links to commercials, brands, etc but just google zinc picolinate now foods and thats it.
if you get more than 50mg daily, please do it with meals, integrate copper, and be sure to check iron and magnesium levels sometimes.
problem with zinc is this, its very helpful for people over 35 (for several reasons other than hair), but your body cant produce nor store it, so you would have to take it every day.
