I'm normally not the resolution type but plans have gone so off the rail lately that I need some reason to start again, and coming up to Christmas with time off, there's a lot of distractions obviously from being disciplined. Last December I managed it, but I was on a fitness wave which really kept me motivated, that's not happening right now.
I'll put some thought into it (and actually only writing this in an attempt to ensure I do so, that's the kinda mental contracts I find I'm locking myself in to lately) but when I tried to do this earlier in the year I ended up making an overly ambitious list of demands for myself.
One thing I wanted to do is set out 4 or so things a day that I'd at least spend 15mins doing. You may not even achieve all 4 but at least it'll focus you on regularly staying focused on things you're interested in.
Even playing guitar, I rarely pick it up but I can learn what I need to in 15-30mins and then repeat the same pattern over and over while I'm watching a film or something.
I also like David's idea of a weekly film, I probably only watched a film once a month at most this year, and each time was a monumentous effort of not getting distracted. If I used to have 4 hours free I could watch 2 films in a row without even thinking of it. Those people who feel some kind of binge-guilt on watching TV shows, have no idea how lucky they are! I watched 1 TV season this year I think and it was fairly short "Mozart in the jungle" and was sure I'd watch the remaining 2 and never did.
These people who are watching several TV shows weekly at an hour long each episode, as well as watching other shows on the side, dunno how anyone does it.
Also with music, I used to make a decent effort of weekly finding new music (not necessarily "new" just, related to another artist I like) and flawless songs topic in the off-topic forum reminds me I haven't been doing this.
Lol I don't want to make a long list but can already see it's not gonna work out that way.
If anyone's interested in that method of 4 things a day to spend 15mins doing, and they have a lot of interests (or just things they put off doing) then it doesn't have to be the same 4 things daily.
So you set up what you're doing for that hour, reading, organising things, etc. And even if you just spend doing that 1 thing for the whole hour or longer, it's still more of a success than having spent most of it refreshing the impact section.
