Obsidian, you look better with long hair or at least as long as your grad pic. I would grow it out again.

I agree you looked awesome with long hair. Really suits you.

Im going to be honest. I think your hair is clearly thinning you can tell by the thickness of the hair on the side of your head above your ears (note the right side of pic) in comparison to the hair on top of your head and fringe. You should not have gaps in your fringe like in the pic below. Your hair looks like its being raped by DHT to me. It just looks whispy and unhealthy not like it did when you had it long.

Your hair is definately thinning on top of your head. You need to get on propecia asap! Do it now dude. Or you will regret it later.

nizoral does nothing on its own seriously. It does not re-grow hair. It only works well in conjunction with a dht blocker. You need a dht blocker!!

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

Well since I am going to the dermatologist on Friday to get him to diagnose my male pattern baldness my questions are this.

1. Can he/she write me a prescription for Finasteride or does it have to be from a certain physician?

2. Am I too young for it or a good age?

Why are you BLATANTLY disregarding CONFIRMED evidence (as presented by this study) that nizoral does, in fact, increase hair shaft diameter

Hundred male volunteers with mild to moderate dandruff and somewhat oily scalp, have used, in a double-blind fashion, a 1% ketoconazole shampoo or a 1% zinc pyrithione shampoo. The test shampoos were applied 2 to 3 times weekly for a total period of 6 months. Several parameters that affect the general health of hair and scalp were assessed at start, and after 1, 3 and 6 months. These parameters included the percent of hairs in anagen phase, the diameter of the hairs, sebum excretion rate at the hairline, and the number of hairs shed in the 24-hour period prior to each assessment. At the end of the study, the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the cosmetic acceptability of the test shampoos.

Forty-four ketoconazole users and forty-three zinc pyrithione users completed the 6 month study period. Analysis of the different parameters shows that the hair diameter gradually increases with chronic ketoconazole use (+8.46%) over a 6 month period, whereas the diameter shows a trend to decrease with zinc pyrithione use over the same period (-2.28%). The sebum excretion rate is reduced with ketoconazole (-6.54%) while it increases with zinc pyrithione (+8.2%) over the same period of time. The number of hair shed over a 24-hour period is reduced by 16.46% with ketoconazole and 6.02% with zinc pyrithione after 6 months. Finally, the percentage hairs in anagen phase increased by 6.4% and 8.4% respectively during the study time. Except for the percentage of hairs in anagen, which showed no difference between the two groups, all other parameters were significantly different in favor of the ketoconazole shampoo.

Both shampoos have been shown to be good anti-dandruff ingredients. Assessment of parameters than can affect the health of hair and scalp, suggests that both ingredients show distinct differences in the way they affect the scalp; indicating that ketoconazole increases hair diameter and reduces scalp oil, whereas zinc pyrithione seems to yield opposite effects. This suggests that, besides their effect on the lipophilic yeast Malassezia spp, ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione act though quite different mechanisms. An overall analysis of hair diameter changes as a function of changes in sebum excretion rate suggests that a reduction in scalp oiliness seems to result in an increased hair diameter. This suggests that, in people with oily hair, regular use of ketoconazole shampoo may result in overall hair fullness.

Nizoral DEFINITELY helps, use the 1% if the 2% is too harsh.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

Well I got back from the doctor, while she said my hair had receded some, she said it is still too early to tell if it is just a mature hairline or male pattern baldness. Either way she wrote me a perscription for Propecia and I really don't know what to do.

I mean at the same time I hear stories of people saying it didn't look bad and then two years later it looked terrible and they finally get on finasteride and use minoxidil and retains the little hair they have left. Yet, at the same time I am afraid of the excessive shedding and it making my hair even more thin. I just combed my hair five to seven times and had about close to 25 hairs fall out (Yeah I counted them). So I really don't know.

EDIT: I just tried parting my hair down the middle, it is too short to do it in the front but damn! It looks like I don't even have hair loss at that point.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

5-7 combs and 25 hair dont seem normal to me unless you havent touched your hair for a whole day....it is very probable that its DHT...i would suggest the use of propecia....if i were you i would have experimented with low doses first to detect and control sides....i think you are catching it early and i think you should stick to propecia...as to shed its ur decision if you prefer temporary shed or permamnent slow shed...nizoral is a good shampoo and can be used even if u never had male pattern baldness....

Yeah, I just saw a picture that made me confirm why I should I get on it NOW, I saw a christmas photo where you can see right through my hair in the temple region with the flash. I wish I would have gotten on it sooner.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

I just combed my hair since I woke up about three hours ago and a shitload of hair fell out (10 - 15 hairs fell out when I combed it back to see my lovely hairline and then forward to make it look thicker on the top of my head). Depressing as usual, then I compared a few of the hairs that fell out to that hair I had when I was 17 (I cut my first long hair off and then kept it as a token) the texture seems about the same on the hair when I was 17 to now but I really do't know. My Mother wants me to just go on Saw Palmetto (I will try it) and 5% minoxidil. I am just going to go tomorrow to the pharmancy to get it and pay for it. It is my hair, I want to exercise every option I can.

I think he was talking about the girl he was with. I think he meant she looked terrible. What was he thinking when he went out with her. :innocent:

He's comparing the actual pics and the ancient pic with the girl. Of course Obsidian is thinning.

Long hair is very nice. I wish i had it done once in my youth :dunno: .

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

That picture was from August 2007 actually.... :freaked2:

My God...I never realized it but I inherited my Mom's hairline. It makes since, her baseline was way back even in the early 80's and her hair is wispy in the front but thick on the sides and back.

Still I am going to start propecia tomorrow along with the foam tonight.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

I wouldn't hit up minoxidil just yet to be honest...

It's a pain in the arse, and i don't think you need it just yet. If you are starting Propecia just give that 6 months to a year on it's own, the only area that looks even remotely thin from your pics is the very centre of the crown and maybe slightly extending down the vertex... but I mean remotely thin.

Just my 2 cents, but once you're on minoxidil you're sort of stuck with it.

You've still got great hair!

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

Obsidian, don't start with the minoxidil right away. Wait at least 8 months after on Propecia. Don't make the same mistake I made. If your hair gets worse, you are not going to know if its the minoxidil or the Propecia making it worse. Not only that but you will spending your money on two treatments and then will have no idea which one is working. I know some people believe to start full force with the big three. Your hair is not too bad right now. My hair was just like yours( I even think mine might have been slighty thicker than yours) and it got worse around the 6 to 8 month mark and I was using minoxidil too. I have no idea which caused it? Minoxidil or Propecia? My hair never got back to before I started Propecia which was much better than it is now. I hope you are prepared for what its like to go through a "shed". Good luck whatever you decide. I wish I had someone give me this advice before.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE

I am ready, if I can't grow back more hair..I atleast want to maintain the hair I have for the next few years of my life. I am still lucky in the sense that unless you are looking for it, it is not noticable and while my hairline I personally feel is close to a NW3, if I could get it back to a NW2 then that is beyond a blessing. Still, I won't hold my breath on that and realize if this maintains my hair for a while then I am blessed. As for the shed, I know it will scare me beyond belief but I realize when I get to that bridge, I will cross it and make it no matter what is thrown in front of me.

Thank you for the advice, it has been very positive.

Re: Obsidian's story - (age 21) UPDATE 06/24/08

It's been a week today since I started propecia and so far this is what I have noticed. I might upload pictures today if I have time.

Hair: Noticed a little more shedding than usual (60 to 80 in the shower, luckily not in clumps) scalp was a little more visible than usual when combing my hair down but when it dries, it is not noticable, the short haircut probably helps hide it a little. I felt the back of my crown and I could feel it through the thin hair more easily than usual. Makes me wonder if I am starting diffuse hair loss more than a receding hairline which I thought I was in for. Found an unpigmented hair in hairline but just one. Am I worried about a major shed? Yes but if it gets worse at the 6 to 8 month mark and I notice a difference in major hair loss (even more) or no improvement, I can stop and go to minoxidil foam/liquid.

Side-Effects: Nothing terrible I don't know why some of these people complain about these sides, they are nowhere near as bad as some of the anti-depressants I took. Mild water-weight but to be honest I need to put on some weight after I crashed dieted and constant running/muscle toning exercises in Fall 2007- Spring 2008 dropping from 152 to 131 (5'8 so yeah I looked like a skeleton), I was at 136 now I am 140. Decreased libido? Yes but I was already having that problem anyway and no girlfriend so no big deal. I noticed headache when I took some vitamins with it so I take them now in the morning and tunnel vision after I take it so I make sure I use it around bed time instead of in the morning.
