this is not a poll, it is stupid

Oh you just hate anything that might shed a negative light on your beloved finasteride.

This poll is fear mongering.

How are people supposed to know the answer to this? What scientific proof does anyone have to properly answer this?

People have been taking this stuff for a very very long time. Scientists would have already discovered this.

Fine, go ahead, delete the poll. Although I doubt scientists would have studied the size of the penises of the study participants during trials. I also doubt studies would have been conducted by scientists after FDA approval was granted because of some anecdotal reports. But you are entitled to your opinion and you are the moderator.

You are talking about a drug that has been on the US market for over 15 years (longer in other places). You would think that there would be some anecdotal evidence besides some guy on a forum when there have been multiple year trials

Where do I access the anecdotal reports of the FDA trials?

Adverse Effects
PROPECIA is generally well tolerated. Adverse effects, which usually have been mild, generally have not required discontinuation of therapy. Finasteride for male pattern hair loss has been evaluated for safety in clinical studies involving more than 3,200 men. In three 12-month, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter studies of comparable design, the overall safety profiles of PROPECIA and placebo were similar. Discontinuation of therapy due to any clinical adverse experience occurred in 1.7% of 945 men treated with PROPECIA and 2.1% of 934 men treated with placebo. In these studies, the following medicine-related adverse experiences were reported in ?1% of men treated with PROPECIA: decreased libido (PROPECIA, 1.8% vs. placebo, 1.3%) and erectile dysfunction (1.3%, 0.7%). In addition, decreased volume of ejaculate was reported in 0.8% of men treated with PROPECIA and 0.4% of men treated with placebo. Resolution of these adverse effects occurred in men who discontinued therapy with PROPECIA and in many who continued therapy. In a separate study, the effect of PROPECIA on ejaculate volume was measured and was not different from that seen with placebo. The incidence of each of the above adverse effects decreased to < 0.3% by the fifth year of treatment with PROPECIA.
The following adverse experiences have been reported in postmarketing use: ejaculation disorder; breast tenderness and enlargement; hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, and swelling of the lips and face, testicular pain.

FDA-trials? Remember Talidome? Vioxx? Even asbestos wasn't considered dangerous at one point..people are different and this drug seems to leave some unlucky people messed up. Just my opinion. And I know for a fact that my dick did not look and feel like this pre this finasteride-business, but guess you know better. Thankfully it seems to be getting a bit better with time.

Amusing..

so your dick tissue is shrinking and expanding that fast eh?

finasteride has been out for a very long time...someone would have discovered this problem by now.

Yes, after quitting finasteride and having 100% numb genitals and no erections what so ever for over a month, my dick has varicose veins on it, it has a rougher texture, is narrower than before and has a bend to the left. Not amusing, and this has been discovered as I am not the only one this has happened to. Email e.g. doctor John Crisler or Eugene Shippen and ask about the potential dangers of this drug.

The problem is that as none of it is mentioned as possible sides by Merck, doctors don't believe it and don't make a report and this keeps happening. Also the nature of these problems don't make it something you want to shout about or talk to your GP about. I have nothing else to add to this. Just check HLH, some newsgroups, askapatient.com, propeciahelp.com etc. Perhaps too many reports to make it fear mongering or BS?

Did you get evaluated before you started taking finasteride?

No, but I was in good shape, had a working healthy looking dick and no gyno so did not think it was necessary. Did however get tested when things went wrong after quitting finasteride and had hypogonadal T-levels with low LH and FSH and an over the range level of prolactin and cortisol. As T-levels are now back (I have no idea where they were before finasteride as I had no baseline tests!) up and prolactin is in check I do feel better. I know finasteride SHOULD NOT affect these levels but it sure did. I have nothing valuable to add to this anymore, just wanted to point out that I think this drug can do so much more than just "keep your prostate healthy and grow hair!" as it has been a mentally devastating experience for me and has caused a depression unlike anything I thought was possible.

Did you get your finasteride from a pharmacy or online?

bubka: And how is that funny? And I don't see how you think it can't happen if you take an anti-androgen that messes with your prostate. And I am a lawyer. As I a) took a drug made for BPH for hair loss b) don't have pre-finasteride hormone tests and c) can't prove that finasteride caused this b) the most severe symptoms arose right after quitting, so I really don't have much of a case. I can however prove that my T-levels are getting back up after quitting finasteride and I still have gynecomastia that I did not have prior to finasteride. Just trying to warn newbies considering finasteride..and thanks to dicks like you it's really not that rewarding.

Cassin: I took Gefina 5mg by Hexal, it is "generic" finasteride. It is from a Finnish pharmacy. I took 1/4 pill every night and 1/8 for the last month.

I have an appointment with a urologist tomorrow to see if he has any ideas how to bring things back to normal. I'm not holding my breath though.
