proscar splitting for correct dose

Due to the fact that proscar is an odd shaped pill and 5mg and I want to only take 1mg daily, this is the route I have been taking;

I dissolve the pill in 10mL of water and use a syringe with a 10mL measurement. this way I can administer 2 mL's of the solution each morning giving me 1mg of the drug. Can someone let me know if this method will damage the effect of the drug. The concern is that the drug is broken down and in water for 5 days. I wonder if this has an effect chemically speaking.

lol you are a nutcase if thats how you are taking finasteride. It seems youve become too accustom and comfortable with the use of syringes. just take the 5mg proscar and BITE APPROXIMATELY 1/4th of it a day. It doesnt matter that you ingest .75mg one day and 1.25g the next. No need to be perfect, it just needs to be ingested everyday and continuously in the system.

a little bit of nutcase i guess, but all the side effect posts I read really freak me out..... I just didn't want to take too much. I don't want balls that ache, man breasts, or erectile dysfunction. That would be a catch 22 on 90% of why the drug is being ingested in the first place.

I might settle down and just knaw on the pill little by little, until then does anyone know if the drugs chemical propers change or diminish if it sits in water for a week?

You are still not administering exactly equal amounts of finasteride that way.

1. It may not be dissolved properly
2. The water is slowly evaporating
3. The finasteride will stick to the side of your container
4. The finasteride will stick to the sides of the syringe
5. I think dissolving in water for a period of time may reduce its efficacy or completely ruin it.
6. It's just ridiculous.

Finasteride doesn't even dissolve in water. You need a solvent like ethanol to do the trick. Anyway, just use a pill splitter or a sharp knife and all your problems are solved. It seems to me that your method now is not only more impractical but also more imprecise.

Finasteride does not need to be taken everyday. You can take 2.5 mg every other day and be fine. In fact, some doctors recommend this for patients that opt to use Proscar as it makes the splitting much easier.

You guys are whacked out…. I still haven’t gotten the answer I’m looking for. An "I think" was mentioned, but I can’t run with that. The method I use is fast and simple, far from ridiculous. None of the product sticks to the side of the container, and your right it doesn’t dissolve completely. It breaks down into fine particles which settle. When the syringe is shaken, they disperse equally, and this is when I administer the dose into a drink. This thing is getting dissected the wrong way. Is there a chemist in the house? I just want to know if the working properties of the pill are hurt by my method. I may try to dissolve it in alcohol and use the same method, however the same question arises, would that effect the working properties of the drug?

Honestly I don't see why you would go through the trouble and do that. I know you don't want to hear comments like mine but I just don't think you should. Buy an xacto knife and use that. It takes me 5 minutes to cut my month supply.

Here is the reason why my unanswered question came up in the first place. This from the link attached to the Betty Crocker response in this thread. Call me a crazy finasteride junkie chef if you will, but I just want to do right.

and I quote

Then, buy and use Propecia. Or, buy a milligram-scale and smash Proscar into powder and weigh out 1 mg doses. Either way, your idea of creating a finasteride-water solution is very imprecise unless you start dissolving with ethanol. And even then, do you know how ethanol tastes?

dissolving finasteride

I have too agree with everyone else that dissolving the finasteride in order to get a percise dose is insane. I used to use a pill splitter (about $5) but I lost it 3 months ago, and now just chip the tablets with my teeth. i would be most concerned that the finasteride would oxidize or in someway degrade when exposed to the water/alcohol.
