EDIT - Month 10 now added. I started Using Revita at month 6 or so, and started using Dr lee's xandrox 5% once daily in place of the nanominox at month 7. I can see improvement, unfortunately the "cow lick" doesn't show much sign of improvement, but does (i think) look worse under the flash than in reality.

After month 10 I started using RPN's Virile mane at night in addition to the rest, the month 12 pics were taken after more or less a month of shedding (i believe from the virile mane), so hoping for some more improvement in the next couple of months from that.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Original Post

Not quite a success story yet, but a promising start maybe? For better or worse I decided I owe this forum enough to chart my journey anyway.

The blah blah:

Always had thinnish hair since I was quite young - as a (very hot I might add) hair dresser once put it "the hairs you have are thick, they're just not really dense". Don't get me wrong, I didn't look like I was balding but I just never had one of those incredibly thick manes of hair.

At uni (about 19-20yrs old) I started noticing a tiny thinning area on the top of my crown in the area oft fondly referred to as the cowlick. Bought some american crew copper peptide stuff, nothing happened, got bored, carried on with the copious amounts of booze, socialising and sex that is the modern day university life. Looking back my hair was starting to get thinner over those 3 years, but it was quite gradual and due to my naturally thin hair went somewhat un-noticed (I think... at least no one mentioned it lol). University finished, moved abroad the following autumn for some further training and shortly after was when one of my "friends" decided to start taking the piss out of me balding. Charming. I laughed it off at first, but then it really seemed to take a turn for the worse with diffuse thinning all over the top, which led to me starting rogaine foam the following spring (2007). Also broke up with my long term Girlfriend while away, became much more self conscious. Funny that.

Fast forward to the end of 2007 and things were getting no better despite a valient approach to the minoxidil applications and it was getting annoying. Also noticed my right temple in particular was creeping up a bit more than it's friend on the other side. Bastard. I had spent most of the year reading up on Androgenetic Alopecia and treatments, sitting waiting for the rogaine to start working. Order some spironolactone cream, especially to try and keep my currently relatively good (albeit thinning) hairline. see little by way of change other than way more time spent infront of a mirror trying to apply stuff. Cue conversation in the gym with an old friend of mine, find out he's been dipping his toes in the world of 5ar blockers (dutasteride to be precise, although he later switched to finasteride) with no ill effect for a few months and the kick up the arse to begin finasteride myself had been delivered.

So, with beautiful timing I began a 'proper' regimen on new years day 2008. My current regimen is as follows:

Morning:

- original source Tea tree and Mint shampoo and conditioner (tingle-tastic and helps with any irritation I get, except my housemate's irritating girlfriend - haven't yet found a product that gets rid of that irritation)
- 0.5mg finasteride
- rogaine foam when practical (occasionally have really early starts, cannae be bothered).

Evening

- Same shampoo/conditioner
- after 1st month I replaced the evening foam with Nanominox-FMS

EDIT - month 5 has seen me add revita shampoo in the mornings

Below is my progress record so far. In my opinion the pics don't really do much to show the extent of my thinning except the very bottom ones, from the front angle which is definately the worst angle in terms of showing my hairloss up. Bright sunny days where I am facing into the sun are my nemesis haha! When I get to showing the pics to my chum who is responsible for my beginning finasteride, i shall have to ask him how representative of reality he thinks they are. It's always hard to gauge these things yourself. So that's more than enough blabber, except my age I suppose which is shall we say is mid twenties.

And without further adieu - my 3 month progress charty wotsit type thing, all pics are after a shower with nice fluffy hair with flash and i've tried to keep length similar:

Oh, actually I tell a lie - one more thing. The rather fetching smiley face is there because I totally forgot to take a picture at month 2 from that angle. I'm sorry. I suck. I know. Give it up already.

Re: Rusty's story

looking good, i'm seeing a slight improvement, you're doing well for only 3 months - unnoticable hairloss to those not in the know.

keep taking pics!

Re: Rusty's story

I shall endeavour to!

Cheers, I think there's a slight improvement in the pics too (albeit nothing drastic), but it's good to hear someone else agree. Not sure how much better it's really looking, but every so often I have a day where I think its starting to look better.

Here's to the next few months seeing more improvement!

Looks good, brother. Excellent pics.

So how old are you now?

You're very lucky you caught it early. I bet you'll maintain quite well over the next decade and more if you keep up with the big three.

Goodluck man, and Welcome!

Re: Rusty's story

I agree the bottom pics are by the most telling of your current situation. In the other pics your hair almost looks normal! :dunno:

Nevertheless I wouldnt be to discouraged as of yet, these things take time. I would wait a full year before reaccessing your situation.

Btw great pics man, very thorough.

cheers, and I Hope you're right!

I'm a depressingly low number of months shy of 25, on the plus side I will be in for cheaper car insurance when I tick over. Every cloud.....

Metalheaddude - Oh yeah, well aware it's a long battle. My intentions are to give it a good year before judging how it's really going, I just figured I should log my journey since this site has given me so much info over the past year. I'll also aim to try and update this every month or two, at least during that first year.

And yeah, it's a funny one - I look at pictures of me out and about on nights out and the like and my hair usually looks fine, but I can see my scalp all the time when I tilt my head forward and look in a mirror because it's right down that frontal view. I think it's heavilly lighting and angle dependant. When it's wet you can forget it though, more scalp than hair! I avoid getting my hair wet in public at all costs now :badmood: lol. In fairness my scalp has always been visible when wet because of the aforementioned natural lack of density, but it is now noticably worse than a few years back. The joys of diffuse thinning I guess.

cheers for the replies chaps

Re: Rusty's story

Believe it or not your hair colour and texture is very similar to mine. In those pics your hair looks freshly washed. When I dont wash my hair for a few days and it become more greasy, the thinning becomes alot more evident, but right after I wash and blow dry it, it almost looks semi normal but it only stays like this for a day.

I suspect your hairloss is similar. Dirty hair, greasy hair or rain (or all three at once) just makes it look 10 times worse.

yeah it does indeed.

Did you see much improvement with finasteride then?

Re: Rusty's story

No actually. Ive been on it for around 4 years now and it has more or less just maintained my hair, but I never noticed a great improvement with finasteride. One year ago I began Rogaine Foam for my crown as I was losing ground, thats when I got most of my regrowth.

To be honest I think you should consider some foam for your crown. minoxidil is the only thing that can actually re-grow hair. finasteride is more or less just a maintaince tool.

Re: Rusty's story

As mentioned above I've been using foam for a good 10 months and seen nowt. I still use it most mornings but have now switched to nanominox fms for my main minoxidil application at night. I am seeing some nice reasonably thick young hairs sprouting up throughout, so hopefully it's working. The added benefit of the switch is that it has other goodies in it that help reduce dht as well as the minoxidil, so it gives me both a topical and internal approach to the DHT problem without having to mess around with seperate topicals.

Re: Rusty's story

Sounds like you're doing everything you can dude. Im certainly not doing anymore than foam and propecia. Its all down to our genes now :shakehead:

How is your diet? I noticed when I went on a low GI diet both my skin, hair and nail health improved. I highly recommend regular excercise and a low GI diet to compliment your regime.

Re: Rusty's story

total gym monkey.... have been for years. Even did an instructor qualification a few years back to tide me over during my gap year before uni.

Try to eat relatively healthy too for the most part, and don't drink particularly often.

Re: Rusty's story

updated month 4 (see first post)

Had a fairly hefty shed for the week or so before the latest pics, as in lots of good hairs coming out in the shower... seems to have slowed now and the pics suggest things haven't got any worse. Here's hoping end month 5 will show some more regrowth! ever hopeful....

Re: Rusty's story

Cheers - Yeah, looks like i'm currently maintaining plus maybe a little regrowth. These things take time though and I'm hoping for some more thickening.

Just updated with end of month 5 pics. Top down view looks similar although a recent shed has maybe left the forward vertex sliiightly thinner. Photo makes it look like the sides and frontal have improved slightly. Also added a little summary of the months with notes of shed for those interested... Just added Revita a week ago, liking it so far as shampoo goes although obviously couldn't say if its had any effect - I can say I haven't had one jot of an itch since starting it though.

after month six I'll add a higher res Month 0 to Month 6 side by side.

Re: Rusty's story - now month 5

Hey dude thanks for the update. Great picture presentation. Yeah you crown looks as though it hasnt improved. The good news its not any worse either. If you can maintain what you have now you would be a very happy man. The front mid scalp region does look marginaly better. Just keep what you're doing there still might be some grwoth to come as you're still in only in month 5. Good luck :)

Re: Rusty's story - now month 5

I'm not too worried about the crown to be honest... I took a pic in horribly bright direct sunlight (below - see if you agree haha) and while it's a bit thin there's no "spot" per se as in the flash pics, and it's certainly not life ending lol. I don't think it'd need much by way of thickening up for me to be relatively happy with it.

It's the frontal (behind the hairline) to the vertex that needs the most work, just looks really thin. But yeah, 5 months is still early days. If things still aren't going where i'd like by 1yr then i'll up the finasteride does to 1mg just to see if that helps.

Re: Rusty's story - now month 5

Hi Rusty, can you tell us a little more about your minoxidil applications? Where exactly on your head do you apply the minoxidil and how often? I ask you this becuse I have just completed week 9 on minoxidil and things are snow significantly worse in the minoxidil applied areas. I just wrote the following in the minoxidil section:
Hi, my name is Tim (not to be confused with Timi),
I have been using minoxidil 5% for 9 weeks now. I apply it from the center of my vertex down to the very front middle of my hairline (imagine drawing a line from the center of your vertex to the front middle of hairline), and also apply it to the right side of my hairline. The results have been very discouraging and i'm considering quitting. Overall. my hair is now thinner as I continue to shed, especially in the frontal region where i'm applying the minoxidil. I purposely did not apply the minoxidil on the left side of my hairline so I could compare the minoxidil (right side) applied region to the untouched (left side) hairline region. Now all I can really say is I pretty much no longer have a right side hairline (untouched left side now looks much better than right minoxidil side). Shouldn't the shedding have stopped by now? I am 9 weeks in to the treatment. I was on Finasteride very low dose for a while with some success in the frontal region but could not handle the sides. I read the next best think was minoxidil. So far it is destroying my hair and accelerating the male pattern baldness pattern! I think it is important to mention I have not had any irritating skin reactions to the minoxidil. Again, shouldn't my hairs be getting thicker by now? PLEASE advise!! Have a great day!
Tim
Rusty, your hair looks great, keep it up and any advice you could supply would be great. If anyone thinks I should stop the minoxidil, please be honest and tell me!! Sorry for not having pics.
Thank you

Re: Rusty's story - now month 5

lol, cheers metalhead...

I think my hair is actually possibly looking a bit better out and about - for example here's a pic somone took this weekend, and while it's from pretty much the best possible angle and the best possible lighting, it is also the morning after a hefty night out and my hair hasn't been washed or anything - i don't think i've seen my hair look that good in a long time though!

tempwt8.jpg

Tim - I apply the minoxidil in maybe... 10 rows across the whole top of my head. I just make a parting using 2 combs and dab it down the line so to speak. Takes about 10-15 mins, but because i only do it in the evening I can cope with that. I think some method of blocking DHT is vital to the success of any regimen, have you tried something with topical finasteride to see if you still get sides? If not, take a look at some of the products sinere have (i use their nanominox-fms, but they have a non finasteride version too.. or look at prox-n or minomuck... basically something that contains dht and androgen blocking goodies).

I'm also very much liking Revita shampoo at the moment, at the very least it's a keto containing shampoo that is nice enough to your hair to be used everyday, and potentially there are a lot of other ingrediants in there that could be useful.

at 9 weeks in I wouldn't be suprised if you are shedding - take a look at my end of 2nd month (so, pretty much exactly 9 weeks!) and you'll see it's noticeably worse. It would be very rare indeed that minoxidil made someone's male pattern baldness worse, the thing that I think tends to happen is people take it, shed, get scared and drop it. Then the hairs that do grow back are another step down the miniturisation cycle because the minoxidil is no longer there to boost their growth... please please note that is just my conjecture though.

And finally, take pics. Good, consistant pics.... it's the only way to tell how things are going, looking in the mirror is way too subjective.

Good luck!
