Dang, I remember coming to this forum when I started losing my hair at 16. I had such hope and I was like wow probably within the next 5 years some breakthrough will occur but for sure in 10 years this wont even be an issue anymore.

Welp. It's been about 14 years since then and we're literally no closer today then we were when I was 16. Like not closer at all. These same threads that exist today about new stuff 5 years out also existed in 2006 with the exact same claims and promises.

On the bright side it's not quite as big a deal to me anymore. Where I used to come here everyday 10 or so years ago I now just stop in every 6 months or so to see what's going on because even though life is awesome it would definitely be cool to have a cure.

Conclusion: this things not getting cured no matter how awesome these companies make their projects sound. Leave it be and move on. Life is awesome with or without hair.

I've been on the forums since around 2003. I remember the hype about Gho, the hope of Intercytex, and what looked like a sure thing in Aderans. I agree with your pessimism about most of what's being discussed these days, but I'm certain that Follica will come to market within four years and that it will grow a significant amount of hair. It's not going to help high NWs, but for NW3s and below, it will be a game changer.

I never had any faith in gho. I was a Gho Home Gho troll. Intercytex was my first major disappointment :p

Wouldn’t it help if it were combined with something else?

I love this forum but this guy is right! Its not about a cure because its not meant to be cured its about research and more importantly research money! I would love to be proved wrong but deductive reasoning says not. The only real advance in the past 20 years has been FUE procedure and better wigs. The bio hackers on sites like this have made more progress then any of these research companies.

Current treatments and solutions like transplants are extremely effective and work for the vast majority.

The only people who are idiots in this debate are those that fall for marketing and pseudoscience, and embrace those over the solutions (albeit imperfect ones) that we already have. Some problems are limited by the laws of reality which isn't some magical plaything that can be fixed by pouring time and money into it. It's not a guarantee that a treatment or cure that is also cost effective will ever be available, it's not something you can magically will into existence through positive thoughts.

Like has been mentioned, anyone who's looked into the work a lot of medical or scientific research companies and institutes in general produce is aware that they're first and foremost driven by $ just like everyone else, and are not necessarily competent; also just like everyone else. Efficiency tweaks and new means of dealing with issues like this may look likely when looking at their progress historically, but there are no guarantees.

What people would you say are not in the “vast majority” who can’t be treated with current treatments? Just curious of your opinion.

Those who can’t handle finasteride/duta sides, those for whom both do not work for maintence, starting treatment too late, high Norwood for whom their donor isn’t viable to produce good results or coverage, no BHT to supplement, bad luck of going to a good surgeon and still having a bad result.

Realistically the combo of current antiandrogen meds with transplants, including BHT if necessary and potentially SMP for the illusion of more density will very effectively treat the majority. There is the money issue of course, but to not apply this to future treatments or a “cure” is delusional.

Of course dealing with multiple transplants, SMP, and meds etc isn’t easy or something everyone can afford or are willing to go through, but for most they will be a viable solution.

Two empirical measures that are different are now we have more treatments in the pipeline as well as multiple treatments with completed phase 2 trials, compared to the we're in pre-clinicals and will be testing on humans soon so it will be out in 5 years of the past.

Life sucks without hair for me. My wig itches and tangles and wears out then I need a new one and I have to maintain it every day.

And those with diffuse retrograde alopecia. :(
