Stayed Over A Girl's House And Overhead This Conversation With Her Family

Just thought I would bring this up, in case anyone had any doubt that bringing up hair loss is a bad idea.

I was staying over this girl's house that I'm somewhat seeing (not official yet), and I was watching the recent Federer vs Nadal final in Miami with her and her parents. At one point, the camera pans over Nadal's head, where you can obviously see his diffuse thinning in the bright sunlight.

At this point, the girl mentions "Wow Rafa is losing his hair, what happened to him" (in a disappointed tone of voice). This comment catches me off guard a bit, seeing that I have obvious thinning on my hairline, even though I've been on the big 3 for the past 5 months, and I've had good regrowth and thickening on my crown particularly. But still, a norwood spotter could still easily expose my diffuse thinning and semi-combover.

I say nothing at this point and just continue watching the tv. Then, her mother follows her comment up with "He even got a hair transplant, looks like it didn't work.". The girl then says "really?" in a surprised voice, and says "yeah I feel bad for him" and lets out a little laugh. I'm just sitting there and I don't say anything, just wondering if they seem to have this aversion to hair loss, how did I not get exposed up to now?...

Regardless, then the dad, an overweight NW1, mentions something about Federer badly receding or something as well. In the middle of this, during commercial breaks the TV is posting adds for some toppik-like powder, and naturally some sarcastic comments were accompanied there.

Anyway, I was thinking to say something like "actually many athletes have hair loss, could be because of the high testosterone/dht production they have that helps them stay in world class shape", but I wisely just shut my mouth and didn't draw any attention to myself.

So, tl;dr summary: Don't bring up your hairloss to anyone. ever. As far as you know, the person maybe hasn't even noticed it.

Pretty standard - I don't think anyone talks about hair loss as a positive.

I know people hate the comparison but going bald is the same as a woman gaining 100lbs. They may still be able to get dates but the standard will be low and people will always be settling for something lesser than they feel they deserve. Also, people will talk about the girl who got fat in the same way people talk about the guy who lost their hair. They will make out they are sympathetic but really they love it. I think this is because if someone declines in looks it makes them feel better about themselves.

Yeah, I never mock or insult anyone, so I was quite taken aback by it...Might be time to drop this chick, even though she is hot :D.

But I think you guys can attest to this, that girls/women love to talk about other people's appearances, so it is somewhat "par for the course" unless you find a unicorn that isn't like that.

Good thing you kept your mouth shut as that would be a misinformed thing to say.

Obviously you're correct, but what would be better to say in that situation:

a) "actually many athletes have hair loss, could be because of the high testosterone/dht production they have that helps them stay in world class shape"

b) "yeah, balding guys sure have sh*t genetics don't they, hmm by the way have you seen the top of my head lately?"

Keep your mind into the present moment. f*** her, have fun and don't talk about hair loss to anyone. Don't cross a bridge till you come to it.
Dante, I like when you talk "dirty".:D Wow, you are evolving. Look at you giving such great advice to a low Norwood.

There isn't a strong correlation between serum testosterone levels and hair loss.

Hair loss is correlated to high insulin and low SHBG, not high testosterone.

So better to say nothing.

David, we can always count on you as a science/medical "fact checker". You always have informative science/medical posts that are very interesting.

My intention, in that situation, was to somehow paint hairloss in a positive light, not to give someone a scientific explanation as to its causes.

Obviously though, there's nothing positive to be said about this disease.

haha wow. this sounds like the bad dream of a hairlosstalk member

Girlfriend has norwood spotting family that includes NW1 dad, critiquing hairloss of various individuals. Then toppik commercial comes on to top everything off

Time to start ripping the labels off those minoxidil bottles for when she comes over :D

If you're happy with this girl, you shouldn't break up with her just because she talks about the appearance of athletes. That's just what people do. It's unlikely you'll ever find a girl that doesn't critique the looks of the athletes, even most guys do that.

It might be some sort of defense mechanism. "I could not become a proffesional athlete, but atleast I got hair!" - Fat NW1.

Maybe in their own deluded mind they are greater. In one way they can lose the weight and still be NW1, but being a bald athlete beats being a fat NW1 any day of the week.
