Success for the older guys

I'm 39 and started noticing hairloss at the age of 25.
I had the classic receding at the temples and thinning at the crown.

My temples only receded slightly but the crown was what got me down the most. I hated sitting down at work and people coming to talk to me, I always felt they were looking at my hairloss. Paranoid or what ;)

My hairloss never progressed fast so I would say sometimes it bothered me, at other times I forgot about it.

At the age of 35 I decided to start doing something and started taking saw palmetto. That did absolutely nothing for my hair.

I then started on nizoral , which seemed to help a little, but finally in June last year I decided to go on Finasteride.

I was very nervous about sides but apart from a little less sex drive initially (first week) there were none. I bought Finpecia from Inhouse btw

My progress has been

0 - 2 months No noticeable change
3 months - i first noticed that when i felt the back of my head, whereas before i could touch scalp with my fingertip, now there was hair. I was pretty excited
3- 6 months increased thickening in the crown
8 months in - I finally plucked up the courage to check using a back mirror and was delighted so see the crown had filled in with no visible sign of balding anymore . Whoo hoo !

Although my temples are still the same as ever my crown in back to how it was before I started thinning.

I'll keep taking the finasteride !

Just to let the older guys out there know that finasteride can work for you too ...

I'll second what Odie said and add that it's pretty cool to see your crown that
was bald before have a nice covering of hair and in a fairly short amount if
time. The stuff does work.

Thanks for the good news!
My story is quite the same, I am 37 years old, met male pattern baldness when I was 27. Started on the big 3 in October 2008 still waiting for results...

Wow this sounds almost too good to be true !
So are you saying you recovered almost 14 years worth of hairloss on the crown in 8 months of finasteride? Are you sure that your crown was really bare ?(considering you didn't check it with a mirror before).
Sometimes I'm excited at what finasteride can do :woot:

Just to clarify - my crown was never bald.
It was thinning pretty badly so that in direct light you could see the thinning area (about the size of the palm of your hand)

Where the crown started I had a patch of VERY thin hair about 2 cm across - virtually a bald spot :/

I also had people comment on it, and used to hate the back mirror at the hair dressers ... so I know it was there.

I went from that to completely filled in :)
Just getting the crown back has given me confidence and to be honest I don't even think about hairloss much anymore, even though my temples receded to a mature hairline a while ago

Overall my hair feels thicker and I'm happy as a result of that and the gains made

I'm 36 and been on Finpecia from Inhouse for over 8 months.

I have yet to see any improvement. Like you, my crown wasnt completely bald and is thinning but the main area of hairloss is hairline and temples. My hair's condition has generally got worse even though I use minoxidil once a day on the hairline and nizoral once a week. I dont use nizoral & minoxidil frequently as it causes irritation but i do take Finpecia 1mg once a day without fail.

I'm hoping its just taking time to kick in and i should wait at least a year before assessing anything.

Any advice?

I think you just need to hang in there dude - stop checking progress and wait until 1 yr at least. There are some people on this board who did not see any improvement until AFTER 8 months so keep with the regimen.

Only thing I do differently is

- no minoxidil
- Nix every other day (leave it on for 10 mins then rinse out)

Congrats man.
No minoxidil?

There's still hope for me :)

Planning to buy minoxidil and finasteride too.

Timi, how long were you on finasteride till you saw results?

I heard we only need to take 1mg daily since body can only absorb 1mg daily.
If took 2x daily, would that be a waste?

how do have the balls not to look at your bald spot in the mirror? let alone for 8 months..

i try not to check for progress, but about a month is the longest i can go.. then when i do look i try to make myself believe it's getting better so i feel better. :sobbing:

i've only been on finasteride for a little over a month, but i hope i get some explosion growth happening soon (lol)...

my crown isn't completely balled either and im only 29.. i doubt i'd get it all filled-in within 8 months like you so your body must of been craving for finasteride or something..

inbetween using Nizoral I use baby shampoo - very mild and kind to the scalp :)
A lot of guys use tea tree, coffein and various thickening shampoos but I just wanted something less harsh on the scalp

Currently using Audace shampoo.

L'oreal Elvive Thickening shampoo for men. It's really amazing, it makes your hair look so much thicker and healthier.

I used baby shampoo before this for about 4 months, but it made my hair look flat. I found it so bad that I was using the nizoral almost every day as it made my hair look so much better.

I'll join your little 30+ chat...

I have the typical male pattern baldness, frontal recession with crown thinning.

I tried minoxidil and finasteride, my body just doesn't agree with those two. Instead, I've been trying to manage stress, and to get all the vitamins and minerals, etc.

My hairloss hasn't progressed in the last year. I had a very little regrowth with minoxidil, but I lost that because I stopped taking minoxidil. The regrowth wasn't cosmetically visible but I knew it was there.

Besides all the supplements, I use nizoral and Alpecin shampoos.

Sorry to post this in your thread Odie.
I think we should make this an official older guys male pattern baldness thread.

My pictures.
Almost 3 months on Proscar (1/5 per day)

So far, not that lucky.
I cut my hair short using hair clipper, 4mm clipper.
I guess need to wait longer to see results.

Hi dudes,

I haven't been on the site much , mainly because my regime is working for me and I hardly think about hairloss anymore these days.

Keep the thread alive guys to show that we older guys have success too ;)
