Success for the older guys

I've been lurking for a good while but felt I had to make a contribution after reading this post.

I am 39 too and started noticing my crown thinning from about 25. Up until then I had thick brown hair which I kept long most of my life. I too became paranoid about people looking at the top of my head. Towards my 30's, my balding crown was quite noticeable and my hairline started receding and my hair was generally diffused. I didn't really do anything about it until 2007 when I got fed up with the whole thing. I started Finpecia from Inhouse in Jan 2007 taking 1mg daily at 8:30 and nizoral. I was already using J&J's Baby Shampoo the same time for years as it's gentle. I noticed my crown was filling in and was losing less hair. Then added Nanoguard, alternating it with nizoral and Johnson's. After 1 year you had to look hard to notice I had male pattern baldness.

Now I'd kept to this regime for about 2.5 years and as I mentioned things were good. In fact I could swear the hair itself got thicker (after a year) but not drastically. Anyway, as I was buying 6 monthly supplies of Finpecia from Inhouse I was due a restock in July 2009. Unfortunately, the night of ordering finasteride, I had had one too many red wines. When the packet arrived I saw there was 6 months of Propecia - and not remembering what I had done, I checked my on-line order - I had ordered Propecia. It was my fault, what a bozo!

As I was about to run out of Finpecia I decided to take the Propecia anyway. This is when things turned around. I have been taking Propecia and since it arrived in July. Now I am losing hair fast. My gains on the crown have disappeared and the bald spot is almost golf ball sized and I can feel my hair is a lot thinner all round. One could put this down obviously to the change in type of finasteride or I may be experiencing a severe shed - all these things happened with a month

Question is, should I dump the Propecia and get back on Finpecia as it was clearly working for me. Or do I ride this out and reorder the Propecia?

Wow!
What a drastic result.

Experts here should explain to us about this.
Propecia & Finpecia had different side effects somehow?

Iv used propecia to start with, then finpecia, now i use fincar and split it. iv had very good results from them all.

finasteride is finasteride, unless its got something that isnt finasteride in it then it should be a shed and would have happened anyway. so id relax and wait for the regrowth, DONT stop.

If you want to check im sure you can get a pill tested at a local pharmacy.

i get my finasteride from inhouse btw.

39 here
big three since feb
my hair was thin in the front and vertex but not bald
had been slowly thinning for 10 years

although there may be some, i haven't noticed any regrowth.
but with me, the hair i already had is much thicker
some of the hairs that were becoming thin and dying sprang back to life and now have totally thickened up

most everyone i know has commented on my hair looking thicker :punk:

now in the morning after i apply foam i cover up the thin areas with hair
then after i get to work i run my hands over the hair to break up the hairs like after you let gel dry on your hair, and i get a pretty good cover up, plus my hairs are all thicker. so im pretty happy with my results.

so basically i don't notice much regrowth, yet ....
but what i had is a lot more healthy thick and full

i could be wrong about the regrowth part just because it happens so slow and i haven't been taking pictures. there might be some.

Old guys? Hah! I'm just stopping in to say hi and raise my hand as another "old" guy. 44. I just joined the forum today. I finally filled my prescription for Proscar. Still deciding when to start. Sooner is probably best. I also organized some photos I took of the top of my head since April. After 5 months on Rogaine foam, nizoral, and Saw Palmetto, I actually have better hair. The one month photos are awful. My hair was too long and it looked like a comb-over. Awful. I did not take start photos and I'm pretty sure the one month photos were the end of my "minoxidil shed." The photos from today still show very thin coverage on my crown but the patch of thinness is definitely smaller! I don't have the balls to post the flash photos but in natural light my hair actually looks good. Well it looks OK.

There was some good advice a few posts back. Don't obsess over this situation. Figure out what works, do it, and move on. Check every few months. I honestly hadn't looked at the back of my head for three months and I am pretty happy right now. It could, of course, be much better so thats why I asked my doctor about trying Proscar.

I have a little of my own advice. I was dating this girl of 35 who had an issue with my thinning hair. What I learned is not to date girls who at that age still place tremendous importance on something as superficial as your hairline. I was unlucky enough to spend an afternoon with her earlier this week and realized just how vapid she was and is. My brain was clouded at the time. Nice body! My friend advised me she was a hit and run rather than a relationship type girl way back when we started and I should have listened. My hair will look better than her body in a few years. I hope!

Stick together old guys and much success in the future! Sorry if I rambled on.

I was chuckling at this. Most of the guys on this forum think thinning or balding means they'll never get women. Well, the women who care that much are usually the ones who are looking for one night stands.

Glad you learned the lesson there LOL

Here is a update from my post in Fri Mar 20, 2009 8:51 pm.
I've tryed Hair Signals from January 2010 to August 2010, hate that product my hair/scalp look green all the time. Stopped HS and started Folligen For Blondes (EOD) since the first of August. To earlie to tell..
I think my hair hasn't change much in the last 10 years. One thing is for sure I'll never have my own post in the Success Stories! :(

How is folligen for blondes? Do it completely dry or is there a very visible residue? Have to apply before bedtime and shower out next morning?

MrBastard,
You can apply Folligen For Blondes before bedtime and you dont have to wash it off in the next morning because it leaves no residue. I like the way my scalp feels when I apply it, it's a very fresh sensation.

Risugo,

Any success so far with Folligen for blondes, or is too early yet?

I'm 46 and plan to start 2.5mg again....is it best to take one 5mg in half at once or split it up morning and evening/night?

Well I'm almost 44, and have been off finasteride and dutasteride for a few years though I'm thinking of getting back onto finasteride/propecia.

Hi guys

Back again for an update. Im almost 42 now and ...long story short - I got on to Rogaine foam around Sept 2010 applying it on the thinning crown only for the first 5 months ED twice a day without fail. I noticed my hair felt thicker and stronger and could be styled over for the first few months (up to May 2011). I was happy. Then my hairline starting receding more so I started to apply RF to my hairline and to my crown in general.

So to recap I am on finasteride 1mg ED (first it was finpecia for 2 years, a brief period with propecia due to an ordering F up and back to finpecia) for about 4.5 years, minoxidil 5%(Regaine Foam) for the last 13 months, nizoral 2% and nanoguard shampoo EOD for the last 3.5 years.

The results after over a year of including Regaine Foam in my regime - my hair is thinner. I am diffuse thinning. The crown has not filled but hasn't expanded hugely and my hair is much thinner overall and more limp than a year ago. I would honestly have to say my hair was better before I started the foam.

Now it looks like I am balding, I've got hairy ears and some other stuff i wont mention.

I am aware of the shedding process, but this shedding has gone on for about 6 months and its all over. I do not get hundred of hairs falling out in the shower or on my pillow, so I must be shedding during the day when I'm doing things.

I am at a crossroads. Do I continue with rogaine foam and possibly risk a total fallout as many seem to have suffered or do I quit it only to find that I should have stuck it out. 13 months on the foam I would think is adequate to get a result - which in my case is further hairloss

Any advise or suggestion would be much appreciated.
