Manage a Pharmacy. I think what you are asking is what is the difference between say a senior pharmacist and a pharmacy manager? The the NHS a Pharmacy Manager will be equivalent of Chief Pharmacist in the US i.e. lead a team of pharmacists covering an entire hospital. I am talking about hospital based pharmacy, NOT your drugstore type commercial outfit.

No, what I'm actually driving at is the peculiar British habit of calling a pharmacist a "chemist". If all of you were were consistent, wouldn't your father be called something like "Chemistry Manager", or somesuch?

Ah! Well Pharmacists who work in a local pharmacy in the UK are often referred to as Chemists. Its an informal term though and never used in hospital or commercial operations.
