I was looking at pictures of some gathering of people at a professional event (at another company), and I noticed that people who tend to outperform also tend to be better looking than average. It isn't always the case, but there is a strong correlation. It was quite jarring as this is in engineering, and you might expect looks to not play that big of a role. There is this one guy I know. He started off quite well in his professional career 13 years back, well prepared, smarter than me. But he is ugly. Recessed chin (the kind you see in before pics of ortho surgery). About 9 years back, he started slacking off, I was really surprised as to why. Having been a slacker myself under depression, I saw the signs back then itself, and could infer he must have had some mental issues. Just saw a recent picture of him at said gathering. NW5 now. In terms of looks he is now a 2. He has also been recently trying to contain the damage of slacking off.
As I was examining this picture, I also had a sudden thought pop into my mind with absolute clarity -- that if I had not gotten my teeth fixed, and had not put in implants in the front, I would not have gotten my job in the US. I was sure of it, although I cannot justify why I felt so sure.
I've been thinking about this in the past few days. Do the uglies lose their drive over time and start underperforming, a result of subconciously internalizing societies judgement that they are subhuman?
There is this other guy I know, super handsome and probably in the top 1% in terms of looks in engineering. And he makes more than 9000 euros per month after tax (not swtizerland). In a public sector job from which he cannot be fired.
