The Importance Of Looks In Professional Life

I was looking at pictures of some gathering of people at a professional event (at another company), and I noticed that people who tend to outperform also tend to be better looking than average. It isn't always the case, but there is a strong correlation. It was quite jarring as this is in engineering, and you might expect looks to not play that big of a role. There is this one guy I know. He started off quite well in his professional career 13 years back, well prepared, smarter than me. But he is ugly. Recessed chin (the kind you see in before pics of ortho surgery). About 9 years back, he started slacking off, I was really surprised as to why. Having been a slacker myself under depression, I saw the signs back then itself, and could infer he must have had some mental issues. Just saw a recent picture of him at said gathering. NW5 now. In terms of looks he is now a 2. He has also been recently trying to contain the damage of slacking off.

As I was examining this picture, I also had a sudden thought pop into my mind with absolute clarity -- that if I had not gotten my teeth fixed, and had not put in implants in the front, I would not have gotten my job in the US. I was sure of it, although I cannot justify why I felt so sure.

I've been thinking about this in the past few days. Do the uglies lose their drive over time and start underperforming, a result of subconciously internalizing societies judgement that they are subhuman?

There is this other guy I know, super handsome and probably in the top 1% in terms of looks in engineering. And he makes more than 9000 euros per month after tax (not swtizerland). In a public sector job from which he cannot be fired.

Being attractive = prone to having others affirm your worth = less susceptibility to feelings of depression based on loneliness and reclusing to within oneself = more productivity

That's why I know I'll never get good career opportunities. Too ugly and too bald at an early age.

I didn't say there are no instances of yuge professional success in spite of having the ugly. I think that if you are aware of societies superficiality, you can in part mitigate the side effects of ugliness.

Specifically, in your case, I suggest getting your teeth fixed, and gymcelling (full body compound exercises).
Gymcelling isn't just for building Chad level muscles, it also changes the way you move and carry yourself which I believe has a big impact on how people subconciously perceive you.

PS: Didn't you say your boss publicly praises you? And you nabbed this cool internship in another country. Seems you are going places.

Male - Looks, height = more job opportunity (and higher pay) and female attraction (of course), without question. As Sinatra said: "...That's life..."

amongst the men, I don't see any real uglies in your pics (and neither any super handsome ones). The lowest is probably that fat bearded dude.

In terms of professional success, my snap judgment is that the 2nd dude (the chubby one) from the left will do the best. He seems to be the best socially skilled. The others might be too young however.

Do you have their names?

Damn physiognomy.

typical 4-5 mediocre lookers. that was my experience too when i visited MIT campus. very mediocre looking and a few weird looking ones but no hot or super uglies

why do you think the 2nd from the left will do best? lol

You planning on going to MIT :)

I put the range as 4-6.5, In the second pic, there are three white dudes in the back who are 6-6.5

Rationale for my snap judgement in the first pic: he seems the most persuasive. And gives off an authority vibe. It could just be age though.

Have you resumed your classes?

In the math olympiad pic, a lot of the kids are 17 and have not yet filled out physically. But based on what I see in that pic I think that the tall Harry Potter guy looks pretty good.

In the Harvard medical school pic, I see multiple good looking people.

What some posters on this forum don't realize is that Instagram models are not representative of reality. Within the real world almost everybody has multiple flaws.

This occurred to me a while back after an extended discussion on this forum where pictures of a bunch of beautiful people were rated as "6.0 at best". I went on a large airplane flying out of Dallas that day, I think to LA. I walked by hundreds of people and noticed that not a single one out of those hundreds of people, on a major flight between major centers most of them with actual lives going on, was a 6.0 by the standards of this forum. It reminded me how some internet-based standards are sufficiently distorted as to be totally meaningless.

Better looking people do have it good. It's a well known fact they have more friends than ugly people.

Regardless though,

Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Mnuchin, etc are all 4/10 by the standards of this forum.

I guess Jamoe Dimon might be a solid 6.5/10.

Lol.

One correction,

I respect Harvard medical school graduates,

But I don't think getting into Harvard college for undergraduate is such a great achievement. The signal-to-noise is lower, some people get in because they're amazing, a lot getting in due to luck, parents, etc.

I've known a few people who went. They're good, but they're not god.
