Too much topical Finasteride

The place where I order my topical solution accidentally prescribed the incorrect topical does (0.25%), which is equal to 2.5 milligrams of solid Finasteride.

I have badly shaped head, and my woman has gone through menopause, so I don't get much pussy.

That said, if we ever divorce I might be able to afford a woman who wants a sugar daddy and will give me sex, so I need to keep my hair.

I've been using it daily because it's topical.

Do people here think it's safe? I am old, so it's not like my libido is in my prime.

Please advise.

In my experience, the topical version becomes systemic and is the same as the oral version. I had the same side effects with the topical version, even at very low doses. After a certain age, you become more prone to side effects because androgen levels naturally decrease, and finasteride doesn't help with that.

To be honest I'm noticing a lower libido in myself at my fifties. I think if I did strength training, I could probably get rid of it.

First thing, 0.25% isn't some wild overdose. It's one of the standard topical strengths, plenty of compounded formulas are made at exactly that. And because it's topical, only a fraction gets absorbed, so 0.25% on your scalp is nothing like swallowing a 2.5mg tablet. The amount reaching your bloodstream is far smaller than the number on the bottle, so there's no cause to panic about it being toxic.

That said, if it's not the strength you were prescribed, that's a dispensing error worth sorting. I'd go back to the place that made it, confirm what you were meant to be on, and let them tell you whether to keep using this batch or swap it, rather than just running with a dose that landed by mistake.

On the side effect worry, topical's lower absorption is the whole reason it tends to cause fewer systemic effects than the oral version, so daily use at this strength isn't something I'd lose sleep over. If you ever did notice anything off, that's your cue to stop and check in with them.

@Elithair,

I respect what you're saying. This was a script rewrite, because they stopped prescribing topical Finasteride. They used to
only prescribe 0.1% in their previous dosages.

It's good to know that it's safe at that dosage.

As long as my middle leg still works, I'm a happy guy. That and my hands still work, I play the electric guitar and violin. Both
as hobbies, I'm not a professional player.

2.5% is wild for a first-time topical script. 0.3% is already considered high and equivalent to a 3mg oral dose, so 2.5% is basically asking for systemic absorption and sides. I’d go back to the Doctor and ask for a lower concentration 0.1% or even 0.025% is enough for most people. No point wrecking your hormones just to keep hair.

That's what I am thinking as well. It used to be this place prescribed .1%, or one milligram of Finasteride. They stopped doing that, and sold this drug that is really new. The problem is the dosage they had for the new drug was small. I think there is either a change of doctor's, or something else down the line.

New to the hair loss but approaching my 50s and I found that implementing more high fat meats (eggs, beef and fish) along with exercise really improved my libido.

@bsmith before calling this dose safe or unsafe, one important detail is missing: how much of the solution are you actually applying each day?

A 0.25% solution contains 2.5 mg per mL, but that does not automatically mean it is the same as swallowing a 2.5 mg tablet. The actual topical dose depends on the number of sprays or the volume applied. At the same time, topical finasteride can still have systemic effects, so we would not dismiss a new symptom simply because the medication is topical.

Since your previous formula was 0.1% and the change to 0.25% was unexpected, it would be sensible to ask the prescriber or pharmacy to confirm the intended number of sprays per day.

You mentioned lower libido. Did you notice a clear change only after starting the 0.25% formula, or was it already present before the switch? Also, how many sprays or mL are you applying each day?

Has anyone else here moved from 0.1% to 0.25% and noticed a difference in either results or side effects?
