Re: Townsend's story - (age 22, My Headbanging days are over)

Well its been five days since I started my regimen and things aren't going well.

First off I have a huge red splotchy rash on the side of my scalp sort of by the temple. It doesn't itch or anything but it doesn't look good and is quite noticeable. My chest for some reason has broken out heavily with acne and I have never had that problem before, it literally sprung up over night. And my hair is falling out like crazy! Its unbelievable, I didn't believe I could have a reaction that fast. And to top it off, my balls are sore.

What should I do? Give it a few more days and see if things improve or stop immediately? HELP!

I'm not on this medication, but have been looking into it.

It sounds like you've had a really bad start, which I'm sure is quite worrying. Alot of people here will probably tell you to ride it out as it's so early, as side effects which come in the opening weeks usually leave after a week or two also.

I suppose it's up to you with that knowledge, if you're comfortable continuing with the rash and acne with the understanding it should leave soon.

What scares me the most is the shedding. I have been slowly losing my hair over the last five years and I never experienced a rapid shed, up until now I never really grasped what shedding really was.

The frightening thing is that it has only been five days since I started with the minoxidil/finasteride! Is this normal!? How do I get rid of the rash?

I'm almost tempted to just say f*ck it, and save myself the time and money...but on the other hand I really want to keep my hair! Oh what a cruel world.

Some people shed when gettin on finasteride/minoxidil, some don't, at least you know you're responding.

I've heard of people shedding after one or two months on finasteride/minoxidil, but I'm shedding after just 5 days! Is this a good sign or should I stop right away?

Hang on in there mate, i know it tough but the hardest thing about being on the treatments is the beginning when your hair starts shedding like crazy and you start losing hope just as quick. Shaving your head helps if that's an option....otherwise hang on and try to stay on the log...the ball ache is normal, i had that, and crazy shedding...hard to say though as i was shedding like crazy before i got on the big 3 and it effects us all differently.

What he said ^.

I have shedded loads since I started finasteride 2months ago.
Hopefully my hair will come back thicker and stronger in the next coming months.

Just hang on in there pal.

Well I just got back from the doctor. The rash had spread across my scalp and chest, it was pretty bad. He told me to get off propecia immediately and I have to take these antibiotics now for the next week or two.

He said I could start again after everything clears up because we don't know if I had a reaction to the finasteride or the minoxidil. I'll have to take each med at a time to see what it was. I'm still determined!

edit: I have a sneaking suspicion its the minoxidil, but we'll see.

Well at least if it is only the minoxidil you can still take propecia

fingers crossed

Just started back up again with both. No side effects whatsoever after a week, so I'm feeling pretty good. I wonder if something else may have caused the side effects I felt before.

Just a mini update. I finally stopped shedding and there is definitely some peach fuzz growing around my temples so I'm pretty excited. Virtually no sides thus far from the finasteride. I plan to post some pics in a month or so when [hopefully] the results are more tangible.

Well its been almost a year now...so I figure an update would be appropriate.

I stopped finasteride in May due to erectile dysfunction and have been on the minoxidil/nizoral regime since. With this new regime my hairline has stayed relatively the same except there is a lot more visible thinning in the crown area. I'm almost to the point of just saying "f#ck it" and just shaving it all.

The good news is I have had a steady girlfriend since april and things are going great. I've known her for almost a year now and she has never once brought up my hair even though its getting noticeably worse (hence the reason for my long hiatus from these forums). I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones? :)

We share a lot of the same interests such as biking, snowboarding, paintball, music, etc...I think thats the key...

Another serious side effect case... I'm starting to seriously doubt about the 2% thing.

Yeah it was actually pretty scary...

I had to take Cialis for a couple months until I got back to normal but its all right now. I think if I would have continued it could have been a lot worse.
