Btw my friend says the Walloons actually had their own native language but because of the big southern influence french took over there. He also says dutch/flemish is much closer to the old franconian language than french.

Flemish nationalists are split on the issue. You have a sizeable minority who still believe in a "Groot-Nederland" or "Dietsch rijk" — meaning a union of Dutch-speaking southern Germanics, an idea that stems from old, fascistic (pre-)WWII ambition. While others are apathic or antagonistic towards the Netherlands and want true independence


By the way, Bruxelles was originally called "Broekzele" , which is Flemish, but like so many things in Belgium it has been Frenchified over the ages

The nomenclature is all kinds of wonky, since it became a taboo and scientists won't touch these things with a pole, but generally race was defined as something biological, whereas ethnicity was defined as a feeling of belonging to a group, a shared language, history and culture.

People often use 'ethnicity' interchangeably with race nowadays, but that's just because race is considered a dirty word. Kinda like gender and sex were the absolute same things in the english language and 'gender' just was a more sanitized label for the same thing.

But in the case of race and ethnicity that muddles things incredibly of course and no one is exactly sure what he is talking about anymore.
